Review: The book provides an excellent history of the organizational evolution and overall weapons development of the German Army anti-tank forces. Unfortunately, there are only a few tabulations of weights, dimensions, and performance characteristics of the various guns or vehicles. Sometimes such information is given within the text or in a photo caption. The text is accompanied by a voluminous collection of black and white photos. There also copies or citations of several army battle action reports, especially from the Russian Front.The book also discusses the consequences of the disorganized and inefficient military industrial base. The army was chronically short of up-to-date weaponry, especially after 1941. The book includes comprehensive descriptions of the conversions of captured French, Czech, and Soviet anti-tank guns and vehicle chassis.Chapter 5 "Front-line Weapons" describes the weapons designed for the individual infantry troops: Panzerfaust, Rakketen-Panzerbuchse, Panzerschreck, Raketenwerfer, and adhesive mines. Chapter 6 "After Kursk - on the Defensive" describes the many self-propelled weapons carriers that were proposed and even constructed as prototypes but never reached significant production levels (if at all) or reached the front line troops.Chapter 8 "High Tech and Austerity" describes the anti-tank guns being developed at the very end of the war. There is a very good description of the 7.5 mm L/21 Pak 37 that I previously have found only briefly mentioned in other books. There are also good descriptions of other weapons such as the PAW 600 high-low pressure gun and the 12.8 cm Kanone 81.Throughout the book there are many comments on the consequences of the inadequate numbers of towing vehicles for the heavier anti-tank guns. German industry just didn't perform as needed. It was also chaotically managed at the top.
