Title: Adds Great Insight to the History of US Involvement in Vietnam

Review: I got bogged down in David Halberstam's The Best & The Brightest, so I turned to this work by Ellsberg to pick up where I left the Halbertstam book (in 1964 to be exact). Ellsberg provided all the detail and history I was looking for in a much more readable text.

In addition to the history lessons provided by this work, which is also much more current than Halbertstam's work, and thus includes all kinds of stuff not available to Halbertstam, like tapes from the White House (both LBJ and Nixon) and declassified info, this book tracks Ellsberg's personal, moral and spiritual journey from war planner to war opposer which was fascinating.

I had always thought of Ellsberg as a "mere" think tank intellectual kind of guy; didn't realize until reading this that he served in the military, saw combat in Vietnam, and had extensive experience in that country.

This book added greatly to my knowledge of the history of Vietnam, and to the importance of the Pentagon Papers.

Review: If you knew that you would be facing up to 115 years in prison if you were to divulge state secrets to the public, even though you believe that it is information that the public ought to know, and that the government had been deliberately lied to keep these away from them, would you do it? Daniel Ellsberg would and did.
This book is the account of what he did, and why he did it. What he did was straightforward enough – he released what became known as the Pentagon Papers. Ellsberg was in a position in which he had access to information that were given to not just one but several successive presidents of the United States. He also had first hand knowledge of the presidents’ decision-making process, in particular, the decision to go to war in Vietnam.
He was horrified to discover that the US military had deliberately provoked Vietnam into firing at them; that the US military ships had incurred into Vietnamese waters and opening fire at the Vietnamese first, and then claim that the Vietnamese attacked the US vessels in international waters.
This book lays out the deep, first-hand experience Ellsberg had in Vietnam; experience which led him to realise that the US was propping up a corrupt and hated South Vietnamese regime; and that given the circumstances, there was no way the South Vietnamese, even with American help, could have beaten the North Vietnamese.
He discovered the hawkish circles that kept suggesting that the president of the United States ought to consider using nuclear weapons. The Pentagon Papers that he copied and released, showed that the US government intended to use tactics of bombing against North Vietnam that were tantamount to torture – the slow, drip, start, stop, intense bombing to increase the pain.
In this personal and touching memoir, Ellsberg describes how he fell in love with Patricia Marx, and how she became a pillar of strength in his darkest hours. He talked about friends were there when he needed them, and the painful decision-making process that led him ultimately to believe that disclosing the top-secret documents was a public duty.
The book ends with the two exciting chapters on Ellsberg’s trial, and Richard Nixon’s alarm at the thought of his role in the US military incursions into Laos and Cambodia would be exposed, led him down the path that culminated in the debacle known as “Watergate”. This is an exciting and illuminating book that is the perfect foil to the Pentagon Papers. The latter reveals the what, and this book reveals the how and why.

Title: It moves along like a novel

Review: A timely, well-written reminder of the dangers to democracy of putting national security ahead of freedom of information. It moves along like a novel, and the history is a nice bonus. Every public school student in the US should be required to read this and get a better idea of how their government really works. Especially instructive are scenes such as one where Kissinger tells Nixon that bombing the dikes in Laos will kill perhaps 150,000 civilians-a number too small for Nixon. His response? "Damn it Henry, think big!" And he suggests they use nuclear weapons.

Review: As a Vietnam Veteran it confirmed many of the things I saw while there. I was a 1st Lieutenant serving in a counter-intelligence unit in Quảng Ngãi Province. While the read was not an exciting read, those who have an interest in the Vietnam War should find it worth the effort. The release of the Pentagon Papers was an illegal act but then so probably was the Vietnam War.

Review: As Vietnam vet and as an American, I am outraged at the deception of the White House dating back to the Truman administration. I do remember feeling while serving in Vietnam that if I go to hell, I want to see LBJ and Robert McNamara the minute I arrive. Equally disturbing is the American people and our government did nothing to not allow this to happen again, i.e. Iran twice Afghanistan once along with all the other political conflicts. Ellsberg clearly puts himself at great risk in releasing the Pentagon Papers.

Review: While this a good book, The reader must keep in mind this is a memoir. It has many passages, and even chapters, that are very wordy and lengthy-not to mention long complex sentences. The first 2/3 of the book sets stage with personal first-hand experience and emotion. I found the last 1/3 of the book the most interesting-because of the facts provided. The book has left me with the desire to read additional books about this era, in particular, the Vietnam war. However, I will not be reading any additional memoirs.
