Title: Feels like these Polity stories are losing their emotional edge

Review: If you've read Asher's 'Polity' novels before - and you should have, this is not best read standalone - then you know what you in for:

- High technology
- Lots of combat and firefights
- AI, FTL, Golem, Aliens, Augmented Humans
- A complicated plot

That complicated plot draws a *lot* of anecdotes and antecedents from previous Polity novels, and a couple of times I had to dip into the archive to refresh the memory so I could put flesh on the point that Asher was making. It is also really complicated, to the point that even the characters wonder about the machinations required to bring all the disparate, independent threads together to make the climactic end sequences work. Fortunately, for the most part, the plot, while complicated, is essentially linear.

I actually won't go into the plot, as the Amazon blurb describes it well enough. I will wonder why the Kindle edition is so expensive (looks to be more than the paperback version, how can that make sense). And I will throw in an observation that the emotional tone of this, and the previous, Polity story seems muted. The immediately previous novel I read was Yoon Ha Lee's "Raven Stratagem" and now I've launched into Peter Watts' "Freeze-Frame Revolution", and they kick Asher to the curb for intense character driven, emotionally laden plots. Both are equally high-tech, but they fairly zing along with electric tension. There was not much tension in "The Solider", it seemed clinical as Earth Central's calculation of events. I think part of this is because Orlandine does not suffer a sufficiently interesting challenge/journey to support the overall story arc. She is not enigmatic like Horace Blegg, nor coming into her own like Ian Cormac, so her involvement is more 'work a day' than pivotal. EC is less God-like, the Prador are losing their aggressive edge, and none of the other characters are sufficiently engaging to raise the bar. I had hopes for Cog, but he needs more airtime to develop into a fully-fledged replacement/alternative for Cormac.

So, a 4-star effort because even with the muted tone, this is still a well written novel with many, many moving parts to keep you interested. My only concern is whether Asher is still interested, because there was a touch of by-the-numbers here, which I never hope to see in what is one of sci-fi's premier serial universe.

Title: A great start to another great Polity story

Review: The new trilogy kicks off shortly after the events of the Transformation series, but well before Orbus picks up. Unlike other Polity series, we don't start with a set of intimately familiar characters, and that makes The Soldier a little harder to get into at first. Orlandine was never likeable, Dragon is typically enigmatic, and Earth Central is the same iteration that banged heads with Amistad in the last trilogy. There is no mention at all of The Weaver, and you would expect that the last Atheter would be all up in anything having to do with existing Jain tech.

We do get ECv2 reminiscing about its predecessor's fate, and fans of King Oberon will be happy and eager to see his experiences with the Jain pre-Orbus. And there is nothing to preclude appearances by The Weaver and/or Amistad later in the series.

Cog, Trike, and Angel are all great and intriguing characters on fascinating journeys - the story overall becomes more absorbing as you become more familiar with them and more vested in their fates. The Client's story unfolds at a good pace, and becomes increasingly compelling as the book progresses.

For me, the most satisfying part of The Soldier was the deeply thoughtful way in which the description of the Jain as violent individualists is reconciled with their star-slinging civilization. We find that the lone and lost Engineer makes more sense this way, and can now easily reconcile this with the Squad in Orbus.

Neal has said that he prefers to start a series with at least one book "banked", meaning that when the first is released he would like the second finished or very nearly finished at the time. Here is hoping that is still the case, because I am hoping against hope that Sverl will make a cameo and I don't want to wait a whole year or more to find out.

Title: Another excellent foray into the universe of Asher's Polity

Review: Another cool story set in the Polity universe of Neal Asher. "The Soldier" is a wide-ranging space opera that can be a bit unwieldy ... if you're new to Asher's Polity fiction, I would recommend you not start here. There is so much background and subplots and characters that are drawn from previous stories that it could be difficult to understand the 'whys & wherefores' if you're stepping into this universe unprepared ;-). We have war drones, Room 101, Hoopers, Earth Central, The Clade, and the Prador all mixed up with new places & characters.

I personally like Asher's writing, especially the personalities he gives to various AI's, along with the detailed fictional future science that can sound mind bogglingly realistic at times. If you crack this book open, be prepared for a long haul. This is not a 2-night storybook. Although I think the story is excellent overall, it can drag on at times (it's not called a 'space opera' for nothing) and I think it could have been tightened up in a few places, but I'm still looking forward to continuing the journey in the remaining books of this new trilogy.
