Title: Good Story Marred by Childish Character

Review: Not nearly as good as the reviews would lead you to believe -- unless you really enjoy silly juvenile behavior. As usual, DeMille puts together a good story and he knows how to write -- but he absolutely ruins the book with the obnoxious character of John Corey. I've read a number of DeMille's more recent books and expected (and received) Corey's typical excessive smartass comments -- well, I knew what I was getting into, so that's not even a critique. This one, however, goes even farther over the top. There was a heavy emphasis on Corey's sex drive (Neanderthal competition for women that I've never witnessed by any man anywhere in my entire life), to the point I was just disgusted with it, and his behavior (e.g., deliberately vandalizing things with an axe because he was angry) would get him fired from any police agency anywhere.

Review: Clearly Nelson DeMille is an accomplished and highly successful author whose books are read and loved by many, including me. This particular book has been around for years and introduces his readers to John Corey, a smart ass, iconoclastic, yet very accomplished New York City homicide detective. Enough people liked the character for DeMille to write five more John Corey stories to-date. I bought this book to find out why the character was so successful and if I too would become a John Corey fan. The simple answer is, yes. I will undoubtedly read more. That being said, the Corey character is not the best part of this book. Rather, the supporting cast is colorful and very interesting. The story line is not terribly original but the way it is told, in the DeMille manner, makes it very entertaining as it builds to a thrilling climax. Corey's detective skills are worthy of some of fictions best. His constant cracking wise does get a little forced and irritating, not only to the other characters but also to the reader. Then he makes up for it with a really good zinger and all is forgiven. I think this book was about 50 pages too long and for that I docked it half a point. Otherwise I recommend it to those who enjoy thrilling detective stories.

Title: Scooby Dooby Do, Where Are You?

Review: This book was a waste of time. It was not interesting or entertaining. The plot is basically a Scooby Do cartoon. The protagonist, John Corey,is a grade A dolt. He’s not amusing, even though the author aims to portray him that way. John Corey has the brain of a 14-year old teenage boy. His obsession with sex and beer was utterly boring.

The other characters are cliches and the overall story is banal.

I am mostly disappointed in myself for not dropping this book after the second chapter.

Review: One of DeMille's older works - the start of the John Corey series. The title is misleading and the first 25% of the book takes you in one direction, but then you are jerked into a totally unexpected direction. I am biased and love DeMille's books; but this lives up to all the hype and expectations. If you like a wiseass character who skirts the rules and "says it like it is," then you will love DeMille's characters and John Corey. This is a well thought out plot, with lots of detailed background that captures your interest and informs. DeMille's characters are believable; are real and lifelike. You can relate to the situations and it is difficult to predict what is going to happen. There is only one part of this book that is hard to swallow - it has to do with Corey's final interaction with the bad guy - but I will forgive him.

Review: This was one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, making me regret a decision many years ago not to read any more Nelson DeMille books. I don't remember now which book(s) I read of his that led to that decision (the General's Daughter, I think), but I am definitely going to be reading the rest of the John Corey series. John Corey is an interesting (although a bit bizarre) character, and the writing is both funny and suspenseful.

Review: I had read the two "Lion" Books by DeMille featuring John Corey and really enjoyed them. I decided that I would go through the series in the order they were published. I enjoyed this one and got to know John Corey as a person (Wiseass Cop) with an interesting sense of humor. It was worth the effort to get to know Corey so I could watch how his character and humor and smart remarks develop in the succeeding novels. I am a DeMille fan.

Title: EVERYONE Should Read This Novel

Review: I've read this book many times before and absolutely loved it. My boyfriend was looking for a good mystery novel so I immediately ordered this. There's some romance, but not like other books where it's so apparent it makes you want to cringe. Romance is only a small element in this story which makes it great. This book is honestly just so interesting, the plot line is so amazing I could go on forever about how much I enjoy reading this.
