"With a love story for the ages, this vivid tale takes the history we know and recasts it into an exciting, technicolor, future world that challenges what we know here in the present, and how we know it. I loved it! I couldn't put it down!" —Beth Revis, New York Times bestselling author of the Across the Universe trilogy

Review: I really enjoyed the story. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in futuristic stories that are also tied to the past. It is a story of what happens if we allow history to repeat itself.

Review: “Cake Eater” is an absolute delight to read and masterfully weaves in biographical elements of the real Marie Antoinette while charting its own compelling fictional story. As a Francophile and history lover with a specific focus on Marie Antoinette, I am amazed by the attention to detail and subtle nods to the real person as well as the real Versailles. At the same time, Dahlin creates a speculative future that is not too far fetched, but cleverly imagined with current trends pushed just beyond their current limits. I cannot wait to read the author’s next projects and cannot recommend this debut novel enough!

Title: .0 out of 5 stars A fun, imaginative retelling of Marie Antoinette!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2022
Review: I thought this was such a fun retelling for Marie Antoinette. I loved the historical facts that were woven into the story and updated to have a futuristic feel. In this reimagined story, Marie Antoinette is marrying into a royal family and a country filled with turmoil. The author did a great job of sticking with the major situations and issues happening in the OG Marie's life. I found myself getting really stressed out as we got closer and closer to that awful beheading. I have to say, Allyson did a great job with the ending...no spoilers! But I was happy with the entire story and the wrap up. This is a perfect read for YA book-lovers who have some interest in historical figures!

I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

Review: Marie Antoinette - but make it science fiction flavored. This was a totally enjoyable retelling of the Marie Antionette story embroidered with subtle digs at the uber-wealthy & futuristic tech.

We meet Marie as she travels to meet her betrothed and leaves her life (and adoring followers and fans) behind. Marie has to learn to navigate an unfamiliar palace while winning over her new public and her reticent Prince, Louis. Following Marie & Louis, as they try to bridge the gap between the decant world of the wealthy and royal and the people they are supposed to rule, we get glimpses into a world that isn't quite what it seems.

While the pacing felt a bit like the stops and starts of a bumper car at times, add this one to your TBR for the characters and the twists and turns of the well-crafted plot! I empathized with Marie (even as she was fitted in outfits that would make a billionaire blush) and cheered for her self-discovery and new loves. Marie is a wonderful character for anyone trying to figure out how they fit in an uncertain world.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ending is polarizing - I loved it though!

Synopsis: She has a million followers on social media.

She uses her fashion-forward eye to pick the perfect angle and filter on every photo.

She’s iconic.

She’s a trend-setter.

She’s Marie Antoinette, the year is 3070, and she’s arrived in the Franc Kingdom to marry the prince, secure an alliance, and rake in likes from her fans.

Versailles is not the perfect palace Marie’s seen on The Apps. Her life is a maze of pointless rules, and the court watches her every move for mistakes. Her shy husband Louis is more interested in horses and computer-hacking than producing heirs. Versailles seems like a dream full of neon-lit statues, handsome android soldiers, and parties till dawn. Under the surface, it’s a creepy den of secrets: surveillance in Marie’s bedroom, censored news feeds, disappearing courtiers.

When Marie and Louis become king and queen long before they’re ready to rule, any efforts to aid their suffering subjects are stamped out by the mega-corporations of the First Estate. Between riots in Paris and image-wrecking social media firestorms, Marie can’t afford to lose her head. Using her social media savvy and Louis’ hacking knowledge, they try to fix their reputations and change their kingdom for the better, but the royals may find it’s already too late. They’re ruling over the end of an era.

Review: I really liked this book! At first it read like the Royal Diaries version of Marie Antoinette but soon it took on a life of its own. The book does good to talk about a lot of underlying issues, two of the most prominent are social media commentary and how information is presented to people. The book had a great conversation about capitalism and the elite on social media and how the AI/algorithm can keep them from seeing real issues. The book also did so good to talk about a similar issue in further detail, and that’s in how information is given. If you were paying attention to the media during 2020 and 2021, you saw a lot about how officials talked down COVID and how that caused people to stop taking it seriously (along with other issues, but the media played a huge role in COVID information distribution). The book has a ton of great quotes about information that is sent to coddle people and calling it “gentle information” which I really loved. I also loved how the book talked so well about how officials and media can be used to intentionally keep people ignorant because it’s easier to control those in power and those not when you keep them ignorant of important matters or of vital information. The book also discussed the power of influencing and how it can be used for good, but how it can also lead to misinformation being spread and how easy the public opinion can sway due to one bad video of you. The book is extremely well written and had amazing world building. I also thought the character development was good and the book was well paced. I really loved this futuristic take on Marie Antoinette and I hope the author does similar things with other historical figures. I, for one, would love to see Elizabeth I and Anastasia.

However, the book did have a lot of confusing moments because it doesn’t 100% line up with the original Marie Antoinette “tale”/life story, but once I got past those I thought the book was super well done.

Verdict: It was great! I recommend for history and sci-fi fans!

Review: Ok listen, when you start reading a book about Marie Antoinette, you have to resign yourself to know that, yeah, this book isn’t going to have a happy ending.
But then you realize that it’s based in 3070, miles ahead and into the future and you just.. you allow yourself to hope. Just for a second…
And I wouldn’t have started hoping if this author wasn’t as good as she is. I was completely immersed into this world she created. It’s not completely perfect, I have some questions about the world overall: what happened in the Event? Where is the rest of the world? All we know is the Austro-Lands and France but like… where’s everything else? I would have loved to hear more about the world at large, but maybe Marie didn’t even know. Maybe nobody told her. Surprisingly, I also loved the slang words used in this book. Typically, I hate how authors incorporate slang for YA books, as sometimes it can come across as inauthentic. But Dahlin really nailed it for me.
I completely fell in love with the characters. There were almost too many to remember but it didn’t become distracting. I loved how Marie’s story ebbed and flowed. I loved the romance of it, how this romance can somehow become real in a world where nothing it real.

God, I love this book so much. I want more from this author
