Title: Good story

Review: As soon as you read the first date entry from Herzog's log, you realize the expedition and story were going to be eclipsed just a year later by the first-ever ascent of Everest by Hillary and Tenzing. That said, it's a good yarn, richly detailed, including the torturous medical treatments in the mountains for frostbite. The book is heavy on logistics including the eventual set up of 5 successive camps before the final assault on Annapurna.
The narrative is dated by its frequent use of the term "coolies" to describe the local porters.

Review: I read Annapurna 70 years after Herzog’s ascent while trekking to the east of the Annapurna Massif. Although no road had yet penetrated the Manaslu area, electricity had reached most villages, along with piped water. Many men from the areas were absent, not as indentured porters but for work in far away countries. Yet, I felt in many ways the descriptions of this epic story remain current, for good and for bad. And, I feel privileged and honored to have traveled some of the same paths and met the same peoples who were instrumental in the first ascent of this grand mountain.

Title: A confused adventure

Review: Read this as a high school student in the 60s. The fascinating thing was how much exploration had to happen before a decision could be made to climb Annapurna. The kindle version was disappointing because I recalled maps and photographs that helped the reader understand the difficulties and the adventure. The " after climb" struggles were as fascinating as the effort to make the climb.

Title: Incredible mountaineering history. A Classic.

Review: One of the best books I have read. An incredible, original, first-hand account of one of history's great expeditions.

The book was written during the 1950s in French and reflects the style of its day and the challenges of translation.

It has been criticized for glossing over conflict within the group and for telling the story from only Herzog's perspective. Well, I think those are both pretty obvious characteristics of the book and the reasonably sophisticated reader will look between the lines, realizing that there is always more than one perspective in a story. This is a primary historical source, not a meta-account of the expedition carefully compiled after exhaustive interviews. When read with an educated mindset, it remains a great book.

Review: Very good historical account from Maurice Herzog's point of view on the first 8,000 meter peak ever climbed, and arguably the hardest of them all. I found his style a bit egocentric for my tastes, but very good. Although apparently he sued a publisher over releasing a diary account of one of the other key climbers on the trip who had passed away, which makes me wonder about the some of the account. But, this is a man who sacrificed enormously (losing fingers and toes) to reach this summit, so little should be taken away from this incredible accomplishment. It is one of the great climbing adventures of the 20th Century, and perhaps more amazing than Hillary and Tenzing's summit of Everest.

Title: Laconic account of an entire expedition, not just climbing action

Review: While considered a mountaineering classic, "Annapurna", or Maurice Herzog's account of the first expedition to successfully climb a 8000 m mountain is more a story of the expedition as a whole rather than a detailed account of technical climbing - the reader expecting a few hundred pages of which pitons were used, etc, may be a bit disappointed. I enjoyed the wider account of the expedition and the challenges associated with actually finding Annapurna (or the original objective, Dhaulagiri) and identifying a viable route up in poorly mapped country while racing the clock against the monsoon season - although Herzog's account has the relatively dry detachment I normally associate with the British upper-class explorer of the past and does not always succeed in conveying the immediacy or drama of the expedition. His account of the final stages of the climb and the near-disastrous aftermath is more compelling, although it is only through reading other works that I have been fully able to grasp the risks involved or the challenges imposed by the clothing and equipment of the day. The reader should be aware that there are other accounts of this expedition that dispute Herzog's version of events, and like the other reviewers of the kindle edition I find the lack of maps a considerable weakness.

Overall, an interesting account of an undoubtedly demanding and heroic expedition, although the reader who is looking for a more vivid picture of mountaineering of the era will almost certainly get more out of
