Title: Anita’s Fresh Start In L.A. Takes Her On An Odyssey-Like Journey Of Self-Discovery As ...
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 4, 2022
Review: She Struggles To Find Her Footing. The Move Takes Her Out Of Her Comfort Zone & Tests Her Moral Compass As She Attempts To Land Her Dream Job At Gonzo Media. Easily Distracted & Desperate To Prove Herself, She Gets Swept Up Into The Goddess Effect & Its Charismatic Wellness Guru, Founder Venus Von Turnen.

Anita Kathlikar is past thirty and has nothing to show for it. She often acts before thinking, so she sometimes gets herself into a pickle. Drinking is her coping mechanism, which only gets her into more trouble. She had moved from New Jersey to New York seven years ago to make a career for herself in the media. She had achieved some success at ABN, but her recent assignment is going nowhere. She can barely keep up with her rent and has a growing balance on her credit card.

Living up to expectations is exhausting, particularly since she doesn’t care to follow the mold. As an Indian woman, she feels pressured to appease everyone else, and she can hardly find the space to breathe. Anita’s best friend Pooja is getting married to Amit, a wealthy man, and will never need to work another day in her life. Anita doesn’t mind working, but she also doesn’t like being compared to her best friend at every turn. The fact that Pooja herself talks down to Anita only compounds the problem. Anita is so afraid of confrontation that chooses to just put up with it.

When Anita attends a future of media conference, little does she expect that her life is about to change. Emilia Kent is the right-hand woman of Gonzo’s CEO, and when she suggests that there might be a job for Anita in L.A., the idea resonates. Anita’s habit of jumping into things combined with her growing feelings of dissatisfaction with her life result in a big cross-country move. It is either brave or foolish, depending on how it works out in the end.

The stars have aligned for Anita, who applied for and was accepted into a co-op in Venice – and her first three months are free. This buys her a little time to line up her job at Gonzo and get her first paycheck. The co-op, called the Gig, was founded by Adil Mehta. He made a fortune from the internet at a young age, then turned around and reinvested it in a number of different companies and ventures. Despite his success and busy travel schedule, he still participates in monthly house dinners at the Gig. His hospitality-focused philosophy makes the house welcoming, and it is home to an eclectic group who are finding their way. Miguel is the head unicorn who manages the house. Other residents include Riley, Christina, Constance, Jay, and Max.

When Emilia is slow to get back to Anita, she finds a distraction with The Goddess Effect, a wellness and fitness center. The founder, Venus von Turnen, is inspirational, and the women that attend workouts there are the object of Anita’s envy. She hopes that by continuing to attend, she will become more like them. She is befriended by Stacy, who takes Anita under her wing.

Anita’s arrival in L.A. doesn’t go as planned. She commences an Odyssey-like journey of self-discovery as she struggles to find her footing. There are distractions along the way that test her resolve. Nothing is as it seems. Things finally begin to fall in place, however, giving Anita her happy-for-now ending.

Unfortunately, there was not much to like about Anita for much of the story. The more I learned, the less I cared for her. Her version of wishful thinking relied heavily on avoidance of responsibility. She dug her own grave and there were many things that just didn’t jive. First, the story begins with Anita obsessing over her ex, Neil. As the background unfolds, however, it doesn’t make much sense for her to have more than a passing curiosity. Indeed, that obsession seems to disappear, so it didn’t feel authentic. Next, New York is obviously a large and diverse city, but from everything gleaned, it seems Anita’s social life revolved mostly around other Indians. That is neither good nor bad, but it was her choice, so learning that she didn’t much like Indian women was a bit odd. She also apparently hadn’t put much effort into branching out into other cultures. Her excuse is just that – an excuse. It might have required a little effort, but again, it was a choice to immerse herself in Indian culture. Once she gets to L.A., race becomes an issue. It is initially a little overkill, but with patience, this particular issue is handled very nicely. It takes on a broad perspective. I don’t enjoy reading anything too preachy when it comes to fiction, so I braced myself, but I was satisfied in the end. Anita’s story pulls together and wraps up nicely.

Anita’s fresh start in L.A. takes her out of her comfort zone and tests her moral compass. She is persistent, but she is also easily distracted. She is lost in the beginning. She is desperate to prove herself, but that often leads her to be fake and inauthentic. Her insecurities and fear of confrontation make her vulnerable, but she willingly puts herself in that position by not standing up for herself. She has always just wanted to feel like she belongs, and she finds that sense of belonging and purpose at The Goddess Effect. She throws herself into fitness while hoping to nail down her dream job at Gonzo, but she soon finds herself sidetracked. Her inability to follow through on things puts her future in L.A. at risk, but once she finally finds her way past the distractions and discovers a purpose, she is good to go. Her story is nicely written. The plot is somewhat complex. There is some coincidence involved, but it works. The characters are unique and interesting. Anita’s character is pretty well-developed, but she deals mostly in the present tense. The story is told in first person from Anita’s POV. I rate this book four stars.

Title: OVERVIEW OF THE SEPTEMBER FIRST READS BOOKS
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 1, 2022
Review: This month you get to pick one free book. There are eight options, but sadly there is no children's book option. Note that you can access more than one book if you use the “share” feature in the Family Library. None of the books has a “look inside” feature as I write, which makes choosing a suitable selection more difficult. That said, there are a number of excellent books.

Also note that at the bottom of the screen you are offered Sally Hepworth's short story “Uncharted Waters” for free if you choose any First Reads book. After you select your book, you will receive an email credit for the short story.

This month's categories are:

thriller
contemporary fiction
historical fiction
legal thriller
memoir
book club fiction
psychological thriller
women's fiction

Let's look at each in turn.

THE FLOCK by J. Todd Scott (thriller) 4 stars
This is the author's fifth book. His other books have been very well received by a limited audience. I looked inside each of the author's other books. He's a good writer, but you can expect a lot of violence and swear words; he does not shy away from using racial slurs. His style is a bit overly dramatic, but thrillers in general are not really my thing so YMMV. He is a former federal agent, so knows whereof he writes.

THE GODDESS EFFECT by Sheila Yasmin Marikar (contemporary fiction) 4 stars
This is the author's first novel. This is one of the books I chose. It's got that beach read vibe. It's hilarious and a quick read. Expect some swear words and some amusing and absurd twists.

THE FIRE AND THE ORE by Olivia Hawker (historical fiction) Strong 5 stars
This book is by an established author who has also published short stories. Her other books have been very well received by a wide audience. This is her fifth book under this name; she has written many books under another. The author's writing is strongly influenced by her interest in genealogy and her own family history, which is very clearly strongly Mormon. I looked into several of her other books and her writing is exceptional. This book would be an excellent choice. Strong 5 stars.

CITY DARK by Roger A. Canaff (legal thriller) 5 stars
This is the author's fourth book. The previous books have been well received by an extremely limited audience. An attorney, former prosecutor, and New Yorker, the author knows whereof he writes. He is open about childhood abuse and how it led him to his legal career; it also very clearly impacted his writing. Looking inside his previous works, I can see that his writing is excellent, so if you like legal thrillers, this may be the book for you.

TOKEN BLACK GIRL by Danielle Prescod (memoir) strong 5 stars
This is the author's first book. We ordered this book and I accessed it through the share feature of the Family Library. It is extremely well written. Fashion and beauty issues are a constant theme, but race dominates; expect that to permeate every page. While it often reads like the author has a bit of a chip on her shoulder, perhaps she's entitled. Hers is a welcome voice, and those of us who have not shared her background would do well to learn from her perspective. I liked this book a good deal more than expected.

SCHOOLED by Ted Fox (book club fiction) 5 stars
This is the author's second book, and his first was hilarious. He has a wicked sense of humor.

THE HIKE by Susi Holliday (psychological thriller) 4 stars
The author has written a number of books which have been reasonably well received by a limited audience, although a recent book did yield 12,000 reviews. Her writing style will absolutely draw you in.

NEVER MEANT TO MEET YOU by Alli Frank & Asha Youmans (women's fiction) 5 stars
This is the authors' second book. Their enjoyable reading style pulls no punches. Expect a lot of race issues and a rollicking good read.

Title: Fun Parody of the wellness industry and obsession with social media
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 16, 2023
Review: I, a wellness fan and follower, found this to be a hilarious and totally on point portrayal of the world we live on. The characters are extreme but also, easy to imagine, and the plot takes a seriously bizarre but also loosely believable turn. This was fun - I read it in the evenings over a few days and it was quick and enjoyable.

Title: I may be too old...
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 8, 2022
Review: To be blunt, I wasn't all that fond of the book for the first 80% of it. There were a lot of things I had to look up, between millenium stuff and Anita's Indian culture. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it took me out of the narrative more than I would have liked. Oh - one thing that never was explained was what a "deck" is. It seems like kind of a proposal one would show a prospective client or employer, but I'm not sure. Maybe this is common knowledge amongst the youngsters now (I'm in my 50s), but a bit more description would have helped a lot.

As for the main character, I didn't like Anita's choices at all. Again, I might be speaking from the "wisdom" I've gained over the years, but I kept wondering why she chose the paths she did. That made her very hard to like.

The last 20% of the book raised my rating from three stars to four. I had questions after finishing the book, so I'm still a bit unsettled by it. If a few more things at the end had been explained, I would have liked it better.

Title: great story of an insecure Indian woman

Review: It turns out that she has been too busy worrying about other people. Once she finds her goddess, everything takes care of itself.
