Title: Practical Steps to Encourage Dreaming/CoCreating

Review: Is this book helpful to a clergy person who leads a congregation? I would say yes. The author outlines clear steps for exploring new ideas. His framework can be used by an individual, with staff, or with a team of laity. The text is easily accessible, and the examples current day. As a solo clergy person, I rely heavily on my congregation. During the pandemic, we started a "Creativity Team" whose primary goal was to try new ideas. I invited them and our leadership to throw as much spaghetti against the wall as we wanted and to see what "stuck" or worked. As the author mentioned, some works and some fall away. We will continue to work together as a community to listen for and to co-create with God.

What I am finding and hearing from other clergy is that currently, folks - especially laity who are volunteers and who work full time jobs - don't have the bandwidth/tolerance/capacity for failure after failure, so I struggle with Lorenzo's and the Deans' belief that failing over and over again is the route to go. People are tired and "failure" can be draining. Overall, I found the book helpful. I plan to use aspects of Lorenzo's framework and am thankful for their work with innovation.

Title: Fills a much needed missing piece....

Review: Ok, it fills two missing pieces in church life, thinking, and leadership. 1.) Hope. How can you not feel hopeful reading this book? Look, Lebrija is not Jesus, but he loves Jesus and you can feel his love as he lays out the material around how to think differently about what lies ahead of us in church life. 2.) He shows you how to do it. Too many leadership books start way at the highest level of value and just leave you to it. "How to Try," gives you the theory and practice side by side. If you are stuck, stalled, or bewildered, pick up this slim volume, read it in an afternoon and then get started. Today!

One more thought, Lebrija understands that the church is changing dramatically. The bits on funding are ... uhm... gold. Also the short section on the sunken cost fallacy ought to be required reading for every vestry, bishop, rector, and lay person. Period.

Review: Instead of looking for one more book that offers a good next idea for your church to try, let this little handbook lead you and your team to generate, explore and implement your own ideas! Lebrija presents 'how to succeed in business' techniques with a simplicity and charm that church folks can follow. He's that excellent teacher who can not only do great things, but explain to others the actual steps he takes to do them. This is the book that will be the stuff of your creative team's retreats. You won't be sorry you started here.

Review: This little volume is packed with easy to digest insights and techniques gleaned from years of business and spiritual experience. The steps are few but execution is critical and Lorenzo spells it out with understanding and humor. Too often those of us charged with a committee aimed at development or innovation jump from idea to implementation without covering the research or obtaining the buy in so critical for success. The steps laid out in this book will help you to go from idea to implementation with greater confidence and knowing that even if it fails, it was implemented with the best data possible. There should be several copies in every church library!

Review: I am a design thinking aficionado who has taught the concepts of design thinking to students, teachers, and school administrators for the last 10 years. Fr. Lorenzo invites us to use the design thinking framework (which emphasizes curiously and empathy; as we partner with the Holy Spirit to share the Good News of God.
He unpacks the mindsets using examples from TryTank. (SPOILER ALERT: many of the examples are from failed experiments.) I could feel Fr Lorenzo’s enthusiasm as I read the book. It felt like I was talking with him in a coffee shop, after his second latte ;) .

Review: With a little over 100 words, Rev. Lebrija could change your church. This quick read emphasizes curiosity and playfulness, experimenting and embracing failure, and gives practical frameworks on how to identify real needs, generate insights into your communities, make plans to address areas of weakness, and more. It's also really accessible, something anyone in the church (and especially lay leadership) could and should read, and it's based on well-studied and clearly often-used techniques. I honestly cannot recommend it enough.

Fr. Lorenzo walks you through the steps with ease and examples. These lessons can be easily applied to daily life, whether you're in the church or not. Well worth the read!

Review: The book does a good job of laying out a frame work for organizing the process of trying out new ideas or concepts. This book also inspires the reader to look not only at the process but to think about how you can get the BEST out of the process. Keeping in mind the author is inspired by not only the ideas or thoughts on trying but supported and directed by prayer that allows the reader to reflect on what inspired the effort in the first place. A quick read for advanced students of the process the book reaffirms and also introduces the organization of trying. Worth a read
