Review: Very well written, interesting novel. One of my favorite First Reads. My complaint may seem trivial, but to me it isn't! One of the characters in the book is named Saoirse. Every time I came to the name, I had to stop and try to figue out how that would possibly be pronounced! It really bothered me! I finally googled it and found out it's pronounced Sursha. (That was NOT one of my guesses!) I hope this helps someone else because it helped me with the flow of the novel.

Title: Historical thriller with detailed descriptions that bring the period to life

Review: When I first started reading this novel, I couldn’t imagine why it was categorized as historical thriller. I found the story engrossing from the first page but thought it more of a fascinating portrait of life in New England post Civil War.

The historical details are so well researched and everything from the dialogue to the actions seems true to the period. The story clearly depicts how little power or credibility women had at that time.

I did see it as a historical mystery for most of the book and it is so very well written. Nothing in it requires one to suspend disbelief. The characterizations are so good that one could even believe that it was based upon a true story rather than being a fictional novel.

As I got toward the end, the historical thriller label made sense. It definitely has a thrilling and unexpected ending. This is one of the best Kindle First books that I have read.

Review: Spoiler alert ahead but this book is full of unresolved issues and has a half-pasted together, abrupt, unresolved and unsatisfying ending that leaves the reader trying to guess how we ended up there.

Initially this was a lovely tale filled with juicy descriptions, intriguing events and haunting characters. However, so many details are left unresolved: does Ada really betray our heroine (and WHY?), what were Cathy’s motives (the few details given are so hastily and briefly mentioned it is anticlimactic other than she wanted Lionel and apparently had an affair with him so killed his wife...the brief details are not well constructed), how are Lionel and Cathy caught and ultimately flipped into the asylum (and why was Lionel sent there?)...we go from the heroine being accused of being crazy and practically enroute to the asylum herself to suddenly having her brother and sister in law incarcerated - baffling and unsatisfying. Also: is Kitty really dead (and how or why)? Was Dr Mayhew complicit in all of the drama (it is ill used to but never really stated so this is a grey area in the end)? - does he simply get away with what he is doing or are the women of the asylum saved so Alice’s tragic loss has some meaning? - WHO ultimately physically pushed Alice? Was it the worker who Cathy speaks to outside at the end and if so...why would she kill him? What happened to the slides - was the constable finally swayed to who the guilty party was? Did the heroine truly kill her mother as Alice accused or was that flashback a medication induced dream?

This book is so promising but in the end, so unresolved. It is very disappointing. I don’t usually write reviews but this book ended up being such a stinker I felt it needed to be shared. I wanted to love this book but was left wanting.

Title: Oh, What a Gothic Tale She Weaves!

Review: This is the first book I've read by this author, and what a suspenseful and evocative tale she weaves! If you like American Gothic stories, this one will grab you from the beginning and not let you go until you put it all together at the end. The first thing that pulled me in was the wonderfully written descriptions replete with sensory details that put you right there. This was not overdone. There was just enough description to give that creepy, spooky feel you want in a Gothic. Our heroine is a widowed Civil War nurse coming back home after the war ends. She is immediately thrown into a situation that might be even worse than the horrors she experienced: the death of her beloved, beautiful, and somewhat mentally unhinged sister. While those at the asylum where she died deem it a suicide, the heroine cannot believe that about her sister... and she was perhaps the one who knew and understood her best. The author is a master at misdirection and blind alleys, increasing the levels of suspense and eerie spookiness that would make you close your eyes if you were watching a movie... but you cannot as you are reading a book! If you love well-written American Gothic stories, this is the one that will keep you turning the pages from the beginning to the end.

Review: Kim Taylor Blakemore does it again. This Civil War era story captivated me and left me breathless. An excellent story that carries you back in time as you feel like you are living it in the moment.

Review: The story was ok but it was written in a very disjointed manner. I kept checking to see if I skipped a page when I was reading because there were so many times the topic changed with no warning and it didn't make sense. It was not worth the time it took to read.

Title: Gripping tale

Review: This book has a slow start and a galloping finish. The truth that comes out was startling to me. The writing is very descriptive. My only complaint is that there is important information that's not revealed in between the climax of the story and the finale. You know how it ends, but not quite how you got there.

Review: I found the main character to be well developed and I could empathise with her. The story got a little farfetched by the end but not so far as to be ridiculous. I enjoyed the experience and can recommend it to those who enjoy twisty mysteries.
