A young American working on the brutal fault line where the war on terror meets the war on drugs. Joel Hafvenstein signed up for a year in Afghanistan in the heart of the country's opium trade, running an American-funded aid program to help thousands of opium poppy farmers make a legal living, and to win hearts and minds away from the former Taliban government.

Title: Excellent personal narrative

Review: I read this book last summer and immediately afterwards read "Three Cups of Tea" from Greg Mortenson.
I have to say that I found Opium Season a much better book!
The writing is well done and you really do feel that you are there in Afghanistan experiencing some of the same horrors that Mr. Hafvenstein saw in his year of working there. You also can feel a real comradery amongst the workers as they take care of each other...such as when he is told to leave for the evening so that the girlfriend doesn't have to get a message saying that he was killed since he needed to write some reports.
I have given this book to many friends who are interested in hearing more about this country and how the US seems to hinder rather than help at times and it has always come back with favorable reviews from them. The only complaint from some is that it is a little "academic" at times.
All in all--a great read though.

Review: I worked for this company and on successor projects in this region. The store is accurate from the author's perspective but may not be 100% factual to what actually outside the author's realm of information. It's a good read to say the least.

Title: Joel Hafvenstein's Heaven and Hell
Date: Reviewed in the United States πΊπΈ on July 7, 2011
Review: Reading "Opium Season" for a class on drug policy, I was struck with the discrepancy inherent in living in Afghanistan at the period that Hafvenstein did. He details it, through this book, as a very happy period in his life with regard to the personal connections he made. This I found to be true as a result of my travels around the region: personal relationships, friendships, are easy to forge. At the same time, Hafvenstein brings to the forefront the very big issues inherent in Afghanistan at that point in time. These issues are all too present today:
-Opium funding Taliban insurgents
-A lack of focus on development
-Faulty security
-Factionalized tribal structures that support the insurgency
Indeed, the biggest aspect I pulled from this book was that the real impediment to a police force in Afghanistan is the lack of a true, noncorrupt police force. Hafvenstein notes at one point in the book that his workers are unable to work on Alternative Livelihood Projects because their security is provided by tribal warlords that are, in turn, funding the opium trade they are trying to curb and the insurgents that fight them.
All in all, this is a touching, heart-breaking firsthand account of one man's struggle in Afghanistan. It is a chilling insight into the problems the country faced and continues to face.

Title: Engrossing and Incisive Look at Afghanistan and International Development
Date: Reviewed in the United States πΊπΈ on October 23, 2007
Review: This vivid memoir both tells a gripping story and demonstrates the enormous problems with the U.S.'s current approach to aid and development work in Afghanistan. Despite the best of intentions and the heroic work efforts detailed in this book, Chemonics and its Afghan workers ultimately not only failed in their attempt to provide alternative livelihoods for opium farmers but, in some cases, lost their lives in the struggle. At best, they provided a brief respite from the chaos and terror that has now returned to the province of Helmand. It's amazing that the author has retained his faith in international development and his love for Afghanistan.

Review: Although it probably wasn't intentional on the authors part, the main point I took away from the book was the general incompetence of American bureaucracy when it comes to dealing with Afghanistan. I was expecting something that revealed the true nature of the Afghan poppy trade and the effect it has, and it's eradication will have, on the people of Afghanistan. Instead I got a glimpse of American arrogance and naivety that is partly to blame for our failure in Iraq, and mishandling of much of Afghanistan.
One excerpt that comes to mind appears about a third of the way through, when the author and his team of aid workers are searching for a house in the city of Lashkargah. They spend time arguing over who is going to make the offer, and which house has the best "western amenities". One particular quip from an American who says they don't want to feel like they're in a war zone. Perhaps he forgot where they were for a second, Afghanistan has been a war zone for the past twenty-five years.
These things aren't the fault of the author, whose writing is very clear and concise. They were only observations of the organization he was working for. Consciously or not, I think the author highlighted the bureaucratic blunders and inefficiencies that have slowed progress in Afghanistan more than he gave readers a view of what the poppy eradication programs will really mean for the Afghan population in the long run. After all, the Americans can wipe out the poppies and go home, but Afghans need to stay, and they need an income.
For a more intimate look into rural Afghan life I highly suggest Rory Stewart'sΒ

Title: Inside the world of development contractors and the dangerous world they work in
Date: Reviewed in the United States πΊπΈ on February 10, 2008
Review: Joel Hafvenstein provides a detailed account of a year in Afghanistan trying to provide wage work for farmers who would otherwise certainly be growing opium poppies. But from the view of a former international development scholar, he also provides a close description of how the largest development contractor in the US works, circulates personnel, uses local expertise. Like the recent studies of Viktor Bout, armsdealer to absolutely anyone, and the expose of Blackwater contractors, Hafvenstein adds a page to the way both war and the supposed pursuit of peace and development are currently pursued. The tragic end is revealed in the introduction, so he is able to to spend much of the book focusing on the characters he lived and worked with. He and Fiona are back in Afghanistan. I worry about them and their neighbors every day. K. Jensen
