Review: Before the start of this variation, the son and heir of Thomas and Fannie Bennet has died, changing the parents and the sisters' behavior dramatically.

Lydia was the twin of the boy, Matthew, and is disconsolate over the recent death of her wombmate. She is not out and is fine with that. Mr Bennet has taken to drinking from morning till night and Mrs Bennet is even more nervous about her future in the hedgerows. Elizabeth runs Longbourn with the assistance of the steward while Jane cares for the youngest sisters.

Some things are similar to canon, Jane visits the Bingley sisters and comes down with a fever (despite arriving in a carriage.) Lizzy stays to assist in her recovery. But Elizabeth rides, and quite well. Mr Darcy trips over a dog, injures his ankle, and is found and helped to return to Netherfield by Elizabeth.

Mr Collins visits but that is a disaster. Mr Wickham is worse than usual but gets what he deserves. Lady Catherine is imperious as always but worse. She doesn't succeed!

All in all, very well written and edited. A sad premise but believable.

Review: I've never been disappointed by this author. Likeable characters, original premise, great writing - her books have it all. The family dynamic is altered in this version, as Lydia has a twin brother. However, the boy is born sickly and eventually dies, throwing the family into deep sorrow, but particularly Mr Bennett, who turns to drunkenness to endure his pain. As a result, Elizabeth takes over the running of Longbourn, with help from the reliable steward.

The Bennett daughters are more reasonable in this variation. The younger daughters are not so empty headed, and all five daughters have a role in helping to survive their loss, and keep the estate solvent. The insult by Mr Darcy at the assembly is handled differently, and it has a large impact on the subsequent developments. Bingley has more of a backbone, which I like, and Darcy has a little less of the stiffness of usual, his softer side coming out more quickly, which is also nice. In other words, the main characters are less cartoonish, less exaggerated, and more the way you'd like them to be.

Laraba Kendig writes books that are comfortable to read. There are villains, and troubles, but they're dealt with by intelligent, sensible people that you care about. This story is lighter on the religious references, which I appreciate, but her characters are always devout Christians. The romance is lovely. There were two marriage proposals that I thought were a little strange, but not enough to detract from the charm of the story.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

Review: I read this on FanFiction, but I love that truth writer always has several epilogues at the end of her books. Wickham got his just reward after he attacked Elizabeth. Caroline left once she realized that Darcy was never going to offer for. Jane and Bingley married along with Darcy and Elizabeth. Mary married in the epilogue. Her husband was a surprise!

Highly recommended for fans of Jane Austen.
