Review: First, I want to say that this was a good book. I enjoyed it and the characters, however, I don't think this is a story about a girl with OCD (or pure O).Let me explain.The Sam we get in the 1st chapter is not the Sam we get for the rest of the book. The Sam in the 1st chapter displays clear OCD thoughts and tendencies, but they kind of fall away through the rest of the book, and as it focuses on her budding relationship we mostly only see her obsession (and compulsions) with the number 3. At that point, she's no longer Pure-O but clear OCD with her need to press buttons 3 times (compulsion) or only park when the odometer is on a 3 (also a completion). She does, I guess, have other obsessive thoughts about friends and boys but the only unhealthy ones we see are about her new crush's ex.I also didn't like how her mother handled the issue in the first chapter. At first, she does well, but then it's followed by this quote from Sam"I’m pretty sure Mom will hide all the sharp objects for the next few days, but I’m okay now."If her mother was taught anything about the disorder (which it's clear she was) then she wouldn't hide anything because in doing so it only reinforces the negative thought, giving it strength.So, if you can't tell at this point, I also suffer from OCD. Not this type, but I do relate to unwanted thoughts. I wanted to see more of that and less of the romance.Again, it was good, but I think if the OCD was taken out we would still have the same book. For most people with OCD, if you took out the disorder our stories would be completely different.

Review: Actual rating 3.5 stars.I am tossing up whether to award this a higher rating. The way it deals with mental illness, primarily OCD is masterful. The representation is top shelf. I feel accurate representation is paramount, and Tamara Ireland Stone deals with this topic sensitively through the experiences of our protagonist Samantha ‘Sam’ McAllister. But it was the tone of ‘Every Last Word’ that is holding me back. It’s hard to talk about a serious ailment without it feeling heavy or depressing, but I would have liked some more levity to break up the narrative and offer some respite. Maybe pose a great juxtaposition for what Sam has to suffer through?Additionally this was a triggering story for me personally. I have OCD, and much of the descriptions of Sam’s attacks I’ve had to deal with in the past, so ‘Every Last Word’ may have a stronger negative emotional impact on me than another reader. Plus, some of the attitudes reflected from Sam’s high school friends feels very mean-girl-esque, and I simply have no time, and low tolerance, for this type of behaviour. Though, Stone addresses this in the novel brilliantly.What we get in ‘Every Last Word’ is a brilliant first person experience of a young girl experiencing OCD, her triggers, her coping mechanisms, and how she grows and adapts throughout high school and friendships. I especially like how she was given new coping mechanisms and confidence as she faced new experiences/ outgrew old ones.There was a lovely twist that I did not see coming (though a particularly overused trope,) but the main plot is fairly predictable. The language and characters suit a younger demographic for the YA market. But the pacing is spot on, I was able to read this very quickly in two sittings. It pulled out a lot of the feels, and concludes on a hopeful note.I’d definitely recommend this to lovers of contemporaries, it levels an accurate portrayal of OCD, and has a cute romance to boot. It’s not for everyone, but I am glad I got to experience Tamara Ireland Stone’s writing. I’ve looked at her other titles on Goodreads and it seems like she writes a lot of cute light romance contemporaries, but none that have ignited my interest at this point. Let me know if you’ve read any of her other titles and what you think about them. I’m on the fence with this author.

Review: Every Last Word is not only an endearing love story, it is a fascinating peek into the mind of a girl with OCD. I couldn’t put it down!The thoughts Sam had, the secrets she kept, the adjustments she had to make every day of her life were truly a struggle for her, and it was amazing to see her journey through all of it.Her struggle with balancing two very separate and different groups of friends was so true to life. Tamara Ireland Stone captured this aspect of high school perfectly with her incredible writing. Every one of Sam’s emotions were felt and understood completely. Sam’s worry—her wish—to be “normal” was so heartfelt and honest that you wanted to just reach in and give her a hug.And the twists! Truthfully, I had a hunch about what was happening pretty early on, but there were still many surprises that I never saw coming. And my hunch did not affect my enjoyment of the story in any way. In fact, I think it enhanced it!Sam’s relationship with AJ was sweet perfection. I loved how they started on pretty rocky ground, but they worked through it and created a beautiful relationship from it. He loved her just as she was, even when she wasn’t sure how she felt about herself. His unwavering honesty was exactly what she needed.After reading this book, you will forever remember Every. Last. Word.

Review: Every Last Word spoke to me in a way that no one can understand. I'm truly surprised that this book has left a big impact on me after reading it because I didn't expect that it would leave such an impression. Normally, I'd comment on the author's writing style, the characters' developments, etc., but I simply have no words for this one.All I know is that Every Last Word did something to me that I can't explain, but in a good way. My emotions are all over the place right now because I took this book on a personal level. I didn't relate with the characters, but something about the story and its message hit me somewhere I'm most vulnerable.I'll certainly recommend this book, but I won't guarantee that it will have the same impact to other readers. I just hope that you'd like it as much as I did.
