Review: This is the rare book that lives up to its blurbs. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the American Legal system—from its history to contemporary research on legal behavior and social change. Along the way, it manages to detail the structure of American law (court, legislatures, administrative agencies, etc.) and most of the main substantive areas of law. It does all this in a way that’s readily accessible—the book has a lively, conversational tone throughout, with plenty of pretty amusing examples of whatever point the authors are trying to make. It’s not a short book, but it’s a relatively easy read.

I would think this book would be most useful to any layperson looking for a modern overview of the legal system. But I would also believe it’s the perfect book for incoming law students (or undergrads thinking about law school), not only because it covers all the basics of the legal system, but because it spends a lot of time situating those institutions and the rules within the broader context of legal culture and society.

It looks like it’s Oxford University Press’ main book in the area, so it’s bound to become the standard. Given its breadth and depth (and that this new edition just came out), that’s probably a good thing.

Review: This is an excellent book for anyone interested in learning more about the development and present structure of American law. It is easy to present the law as a bone-dry series of lists or flow charts, but the authors avoid that by mixing appropriate historical detail, clear analysis and approachable writing. 'American Law' is a terrific read for students of different levels and even legal professionals. The book seems ideal for collegiate courses in law and government, as well as a variety of law school classes. With that said, it is also worthwhile for the casual reader who wants to know more about something that touches practically every aspect of our lives.
