Title: Easy to read and understand Summary of the history and state of Laws for Epidemics, includes COVID19

Review: First, I am not a lawyer and can't judge this book from a legal viewpoint. I highly recommend this book as essential to our country's debate about pandemic laws, especially during and after the COVID19 crisis. His general statements define federal, state, and local boundaries to some degree. However, I would like more exact dates and statements, more details about context and particular legal arguments, but that would make the book less accessible to the general public. Generally, the laws reflect the available means to protect our health, however, I didn't see an extensive discussion about COVID19 in that context.
The book emphasizes how much epidemic law depends on state and local government, rather than federal laws. This makes some overall sense, in that epidemics involve fear and responses which affect people widely, so the political calculus might need to remain at the state level. Intrinsic to the responses are the means necessary and available to stop a deadly pandemic, but that is not discussed in detail but woven into the background.

However, I would like to have read more about identifying any federal powers and past history in controlling pandemics within the US, again I am not a lawyer. The author mentions police power not being an option at the federal level, but that must have a complex history and I would imagine that there are many powers besides the ones listed. There is no discussion of testing at a nationwide level which is now necessary to control COVID19, so the issue of whether CDC or other scientific recommendations played heavily into past laws and federal responses is skipped. Clearly, during WWI President Wilson avoided any responses and news releases about the 1918 Spanish Flu, but did that approach continue? Incidentally, the book does miss that George Washington instituted cow pox vaccinations for our new Army and that gave the colonies an advantage during the American Revolution.
Another area of interest is how much the federal government controls our borders, especially in this modern age of massive transportation and telecommunication innovations. Apparently, Trump could have closed flights from Europe and that might have slowed the COVID19 pandemic, but that is only mentioned in passing with no detail, for example that Trump's advisors knew of the more critical danger coming from Europe. Also, the massive cyberattack by Putin and his agents in Russia is not discussed at all, this has a huge impact on controlling a pandemic, where disinformation is a key factor in crippling our citizens' responses. What federal laws or historical actions can be invoked?
Most generally, I am not sure that there is a well balanced emphasis on the history of discrimination against various immigrant groups and racism, it is possible that there is too much emphasis on mistreatment of Oriental communities or African-Americans vs other communities, such as any immigrant groups in our history or just lower classes, although this is discussed, it is not clear what the historical statistics might show for correlations.

Again, this is a great summary and a fine introduction to these critical issues of how pandemic laws are related to our societal structures.

Review: I enjoyed this book immensely. It is very up to date, and I definitely would require students in public health and epidemiology to read this book. With the huge fiasco going on concerning requiring people to get vaccines, this is very necessary information concerning when there have been epidemics and pandemics in the US, have legal means been used to require vaccinations? Yes, in the past its been used. This is not new, what is new is the ridiculous idea that you can live in a vacuum during a pandemic, and not be required to follow the law. People did complain during the 1918 influenza outbreak, but not to the extent the uneducated are doing it now. Witt demonstrates how requirements for vaccines have been handled in the past. This is a bit dry in reading, but I got through it quickly because it is so pertinent to what is currently happening. IF people have questions, just send them to this book!

Review: This book is a good stepping stone introduction to more in-depth scholarly works. It reads more like a high school paper than a serious review of health policy, and fails to consider many factors involved with ethnic disparities in disease contraction and spread. However, for the price, I am satisfied.

Review: Did not meet expectation. I wanted clarification on progress made in containing the contagion and on the evolution of civil law to support that effort. This author wants sympathy for the poor and does not recognize the monumental effort to produce medicine to fight the diseases. He belongs in Congress with the other cry babies.

Review: I liked the legal aspects, i.e. federal government vs state government on issues of civil liberty and public health. I disliked the last two chapters because it went off the rails and brought in George Floyd, who had NOTHING to do with any health crisis!

Review: Book seems to be less about history than complaining about “discriminatory control over people of color, the poor, and immigrant newcomers…” for example, can you believe they had the nerve to discriminate and quarantine a lot of Chinese – and only the Chinese, when Chinatown had an outbreak?
And can you believe they had the nerve to discriminate against travellers from New york, with New York being an epicenter of the spread of C-19? Captain obvious?

Also, who knew that Donald trump was motivated not by national health or national security to block Chinese travel for awhile… but he was motivated only by racist mumbojumbo, he must want to spit in the faces of the Asians??? A direct quote:
“America has long been fertile for another outbreak of racially motivated crime. And as the pandemic grew worse, the White House got into the business of creating new rules aimed at Chinese residents .In May, President Trump moved to ban certain groups of Chinese graduates students and researchers. His aides defended the ban as a countermeasure against industrial espionage. But the timing suggested that the president was adding his weight to the thuggish attackers who had been spitting on and attacking people of Asian descent for months”

If you want to read a rant yeah definitely read this.
