Title: A poignant, opinionated memoir of a very unusual place in America

Review: I read this book expecting to write a scathing review from what many friends had told me, all, like me, former residents of China Lake/Ridgecrest. What I found was a beautifully written, bittersweet memoir in which that community was important, but really the story was the author's life.

A Navy brat, I came to China Lake much as she did, though eight years earlier. She came from rainy Washington state, I from an idyllic freshman year in high school in the Honolulu of the early 1960's, when the city was swept by trade winds, there were no high rises, and it looked nothing like the hot, humid, overbuilt, traffic-congested swamp that it is today.

When we made the right turn from Highway 14 to go down the hill through tiny Inyokern to China Lake, I gasped. We had gone from the largest city in the Pacific, the most beautiful place I had ever seen, to a dust bowl of 8,000 people. I blurted out to my father "You've taken us from Paradise to Hell!" He didn't disagree at the time. But he was military, and went where he was assigned. It was to be his last command, and he retired and died there.

The author's descriptions of the base, Michelson Laboratory, the desert flora and fauna are accurate and beautifully drawn. I learned a fair amount about the flaws of a number of units on the base I had not known before. The author has a narrow lens in one respect--she spent almost all of her pre-college years there in evangelical Protestant schools.

I attended the public high school, Burroughs (she is clueless about it, I have to say), when it was experiencing what my late debate coach, world history teacher and surrogate mother called a "perfect storm." School bond issues routinely passed; our student body was drawn from the sons and daughters of elite scientists, military personnel and defense contractors, our teachers were superb, and we had superb teachers, a cornucopia of advanced placement and honors classes, six languages to choose from (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Latin), and some unique programs. It was academically as good as any private school in the state then, I can say with some confidence.

One was a work-study program in which I participated the second semester of my junior year, when we worked after school on projects at Michelson Laboratory. It was fascinating. I had to have a Secret clearance to enter the program, and it was not easy to get. I also worked the summer between my junior and senior years and before my freshman year in college at the Infrared Countermeasures Group at the lab, another great experience. Both the science and seeing how civil servants worked, and didn't. I will add that Prof. Piper's observations on the DOD's operations and the work ethic or lack thereof to be found on the base sometimes are pretty accurate.

I would not trade my years there for anything. My sister, who graduated from Burroughs the year Prof. Piper arrived, still lives there, as does her husband. She spent her entire working life on the base in personnel and accounting, as did her husband after he returned from Vietnam with a Purple Heart, though his job in the chemical lab was among the most dangerous on the base. Their children still live and work in Ridgecrest too.

Like the author, I was last there in 2016, for a high school reunion. The haunting, austere beauty of the high desert struck me anew, and I was quite taken by a visit to what the author calls the "armaments museum" (official name: The U.S. Naval Museum of Armament and Technology), where I spent two hours with a small group, led by a docent who was the older brother of a classmate of mine who had also been my officemate my second summer working at the lab. He had a wealth of knowledge, and his stories were fascinating.

if you have ever lived in China Lake-Ridgecrest, particularly in the period from the late Sixties forward, I very much recommend this book. It is thoroughly researched, and even if you disagree with the author's opinions, it will add to your understanding of perhaps our major defense research center and its community.

Title: There has to be many stories about growing up on a secret base. Some of them could be better.

Review: In reviewing Dr. Karen Piper’s, A Girls Guide to Missiles I cannot judge the factual content in her recollections of growing up at the US Navy research facility at China Lake. Instead I will take her at her word that this is intended to be her recollections and not a recitation of history. There may be a distinction between autobiography and what she has written, but I have no reason to doubt her intention to share her impressions without the necessity to confirm particular facts. To doubt her perspicacity, seems to be beside the point. We are in her head and in the moments she presents, as she remembers them.

Dr. Piper came of age in a time when Americans were moving from Our Government is us to the Beltway Bandits and the rest of conspiracy theory. Her initial influences were so politically and religiously conservative that the took a ‘D’ and lost a college scholarship rather than read assigned Karl Marx. Her later loss of philosophical innocence is more tied to the “What and When did he Know” of the Reagan Presidency and less to the draft marches during Viet Nam.
Her semi-isolation on a Navy base near a conservative community must have set her up as that much less prepared for the more varied, nuanced and highly left leaning west coast communities where she would find her scholastic maturity.

And it is here where she begins to lose me. Dr. Piper has lots of questions. Many of them insightful, many merely ironic. She seems to lack any internal drive to analyze. And not much desire to leave us with fleshed out conclusions. She is content to leave us with her targeted uncertainties and answers only by implication. Were this the end of her book, I would not be three star critical. In fact I think I would enjoy taking her courses. It is possible that city slicker that I am and hiker of trails woman that she is we might become friends. Much more likely I would bore her than the other way around.

What most bothers me about this book is that everyone mentioned in the book has no life or value or meaning except in reference to her. Late in A Girl’s Guide we do get some details about her father from his life before Karen. But that recitation only almost admits that people can have a life that is for them. Dr. Piper clearly loved her parents. While she has a classic little girl love for her father, her mom only seems to get mention in terms of what she does or did to the author and images of her mom as a self-effacing part of the work at China Lake. A kind of feminist appeal rather than a deep personal respect.

Images is also interesting from another aspect. There is a tiny selection of pictures included. Well towards the end. We never see the author except as a child. As if we are to read her book as the story of a child and not an educated adult. No Wedding photos, except of her sister, who may have a lot more on the ball than the book suggests. Her mom gets one picture at her office desk, her dad two and if such a thing is possible a sarcastic photo titled “US Navy Rock Art”.

I do not leave A Girl’s Guide to Missiles disliking Dr. Karen Piper, but neither am I inspired. The sense of things withheld and come no closer may be the alternative to a tell all expose’; but should a reader feel left in a person’s secret desert after reading her recollections?

Review: While this is fiction, I lived in this area at the same time and really don't remember the things she reflects on! This book is also very poorly written and really not worth your money. I wonder how she got it published in the first place!!!!!

Review: Having grown up at China Lake, I empathized with the child’s confusion and the adjustment required when she left the highly structured society of the base and encountered the chaos of college.

My father didn’t work on missiles—he did basic research at Michelson Lab—but we all knew about the sidewinder. I too was a Clerk Typist our on the range in the Fuze department. Talos and Terrier were the code names for the middles they were working on at the time. Like Piper, I typed memos that needed a hierarchy of signatures. I’d forgotten so much. This brought it back.

Also like Piper, I tried to visit my old home on Coral Sea but was turned away at the gate because of the need for a two day background check. I wanted to see if the trees we had planted had survived. I’ll never know. That was my last visit as well.

China Lake will be with me forever, but I cannot go back. It was an amazing place and this book helps it live on.
