Review: Instead of answering the question that its title proposes, the book simply tells us all the reasons it presumably stinks to be 50...as if we didn't already know. Hormones going awry, looks going down the drain, children leaving the nest, parents getting old and dying...But never for a minute did I feel that this French author and her friends know anything we Americans don't know. In fact, they seem unusually preoccupied their expanded waistlines and men leaving them for younger women. Perhaps I was expecting some European wisdom that doesn't exist, but this book only made me feel worse about getting older. The author's tone is more cynical than funny, especially when she's writing about the threat of younger women and declining job opportunities; that, combined with her antiquated language, made her sound more like 70 than 50. Also, I am happily married, and there wasn't much inspiration here for married women -- the book assumes you are divorced and bitter. I'm disappointed because, as a newly christened 50-something who still wears a size 2 and feels as vibrant, sexy and socially relevant as ever, I was looking for an uplifting gift to give my friends as they reach the big birthday. This book definitely wasn't it.

Review: Yikes, depressing! Not at all what I expected. More about starting over at 50 - relationships, career - rather than identifying ways to feel young, it felt like a long list of the depressing things that happen as we age. Not the pick me up I was hoping to find.
