This treatment manual provides mental health professionals with instructions for conducting written exposure therapy (WET) with clients who have posttraumatic stress disorder.

Authors Denise Sloan and Brian Marx developed WET in response to a growing demand for an effective PTSD treatment that is easier to implement, more affordable, and has lower dropout rates than other trauma interventions. In their unique approach, the client writes about a single traumatic event, and the therapist focuses on the client’s experiences in writing about the trauma, rather than the event itself.

Review: Let me save you some money: 1. Conduct 5 sessions (in the first give them a basic psychoeducational intro to PTSD and an overview of the process); 2. Have them write for 30 minutes each time about their trauma focusing on their thoughts and feelings (i.e. their experience of the trauma); 3. Read it each time to determine that they're following the protocol; 4. Let them know they may experience uncomfortable symptoms (i.e. it'll get worse before it gets better); 5. If they complete the task the first time around, have them focus on a particularly emotionally troubling aspect, how it has affected their life, etc. next time. If they deviate from the objectives, guide them back to the objectives. The book advises using the SUD scale.

That's it! It's basically just a structured protocol for Pennebaker's method contextualized for PTSD.
The scripts emphasize the focus on experience and the understanding that this will be difficult. Help your client resist the urge to indulge in experiential avoidance within and outside of the session. The application spans probably 5 pages total in this tiny $40 book and is largely redundant and straightforward with each session. Anyone purchasing this should already know not to try to rescue a client from discomfort and to emphasize them being present with their experience while maintaining a kind and gentle presence. Most of this book is supportive evidence for how this treatment protocol developed the "evidence-based" status.

I appreciate the contributions of the authors for helping to establish the method as safe and effective and for writing a nuts and bolts overview. I appreciate less the exploitation of the method for financial gain disproportionate to the content.

Review: For a professional who is knowledgeable about other treatments for PTSD (e.g., PE, CPT, etc.) the book is an easy, quick read. I especially like the way it's organized, complete w/ the treatment protocol at the end of the book. I think the treatment itself is an exciting development in the treatment of PTSD bc it's much more user friendly than the mountain of worksheets w/ CPT and the homework assignments in several other treatments. I can't wait to try it w/ active duty military.
