Review: Catholic philosopher Peter Kreeft has taught philosophy at Boston College for more than 50 years and he has written about 97 books, mostly explaining philosophy from a Catholic perspective. He is a modern Thomas Aquinas who write with the clarity of G K Chesterton. He explains difficult concepts clearly and succinctly, and he consistently offers true wisdom.

In Food for the Soul, Kreeft lists the weekly Catholic Mass Bible readings and he offers background, explanations and insights on the readings. Throughout this book there are many profound insights. Here are a few of those insights:

Every ethical choice we make has three dimensions or aspects: the objective deed we do, the subjective motive or intention for doing it, and the surrounding circumstances or situation in which we do it. One of the basic principles of morality is to do the right thing for the right reason in the right way. If any one of these three factors in a choice is evil, that makes the choice to do it evil. The Ten Commandments tell you what the right things are. The love of God and neighbor are the right reason. And human reason and common sense evaluating the circumstances tell you the right way to do the right thing for the right reason.

Damnation is the opposite of love; damnation is the absence of loving or being loved (which is the very life of God and of Heaven). [There is no hope and no love in Hell.]

It’s love that makes us human, and lovelessness that makes us human. Only human beings can love because only human beings have free will. Love is our gravity; love is what moves us. We become what we love.

Our marriages are full of challenges, difficulties, sufferings and disappointments, as well as joys, but the single most important quality in them is not happiness, ease, or pleasure, but faithfulness. Saint Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:6-8 that “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” That should be the top priority among married couples - fidelity.

Right is a kind of might; right is a kind of spiritual might or spiritual power. There is a connection between might and right, or matter and spirit, or power and goodness. The connection is not that might makes right, but that right is spiritual might over men’s souls, which is the power of conscience. Conscience - a sense of right and wrong - does not compel us, but there is a force to conscience, a powerful pressure to do what we believe is right and not what we believe is wrong. It has power. It compels us, not physically but morally. Righteousness is a spiritual power, not a physical power. Conscience has power because it is the voice of Almighty God. [Righteousness is a spiritual power that appeals to the man’s conscience, and ‘right’ is stronger than ‘might’, which is why evil men fear the truth. Spiritual might is stronger than physical might.]

Just as our bodies need food, our souls need nourishment, and what nourishes the soul is truth, beauty and goodness. Peter Kreeft’s Food for the Soul is a banquet with many servings of profound truth, beauty and goodness. And not only is this a great meal, it’s a pleasure to read.

Review: I purchase a book based on a recommendation from a friend. The commentary is better than expected, witty, insightful, and thought-provoking. The quality of the book is excellent. Like all Word on Fire books, it is beautifully made, with high-quality hardcover, binding, paper, and print.

I plan to use it for personal Bible study, to prepare for Mass, as well as for a men’s small group Bible study. Highly recommend it. Worth every penny!

Title: Brief Sermons & Hominies in a book - Kreeft being Kreeft

Review: This is a worthy book of brief and solid sermons and homilies. Kreeft is Kreeft - his style is welcome to many, disturbing to some. If you like Kreeft you will surely find this book a nice addition to your resources of 'commentary on the Mass readings.' A different reviewer was offended the statement that Protestants have sermons and Catholics have homilies. In fact, virtually all Christian religious traditions have BOTH sermons and homilies. Topical discussions are different from Biblical interpretations/commentary - both are helpful, both have a place. In sum, worthy content focused on the Mass readings (i.e., Sunday and Specials, not the everyday 'daily' readings). WJ Oct 2022

Review: Since I bought my copy from Word on Fire directly i uploaded an image so people knew i actually owned a copy.

But anyway, I read this book after I get home from Mass each Sunday and I love it. It is like getting two homily's each Mass. The insight into the two readings and the Gospel for that week is just great stuff. Any person who takes the time to read about the Church and the Bible will walk away deeply touched and this book will make that process easier.
