Title: Great but half finished, abrupt end- PLEASE WRITE THE OTHER HALF OF THIS STORY!

Review: I rarely pre purchase any books but i did this one after reading Ms. Balogh's description of seeing this character at 56, as her own person, with her own inner life and relationship history. Her presentation in the previous books did her more justice. I don't mean i didn't like this, i loved it, I loved the development of the character up until the "i want a big wedding", as it seemed out of character and you don't hear the characters thoughts as to why, and she disappears as a thinking person altogether. Just when there would have been so much on her mind, so many adjustments to make, and enjoy. We the readers are robbed of the terrific post marriage couple challenges and development that Ms. Balogh makes interesting in her other books leading you to surmise that the character in fact really wasn't worthy of the effort put into the younger characters of the previous books. So instead of believing that Ms. Balogh really saw this character the way she said she did, she insults her dignity and depth potential rather than exploiting it. (which is the opposite of how i felt prior to the wedding which was also, the end. ughhhhh.
The author's book description and the whole- novella? led us to believe in something that was promised and was not delivered for no other reason than.....? what?
REDEMPTION WOULD COME IN A PART TWO OF THIS STORY, the second half owed to the readers and the fine, interesting characters. And i don't mean relegated to the outskirts of the stories of the other family members.

Title: A Disappointingly Short Story - 148 pages to be exact!

Review: I always enjoy Mary Balogh's stories, but my one disappointment with this book was the length of it. About 40% of the text was taken up with excerpts from the first 6 books. Needless to say I felt a bit cheated, since this was simply a very short story. I hope I don't run up against this again in another of Mary's new books.

Review: So disappointed....love the Wescott series and was so looking forward to Matilda’s story ...but this book was clearly put together with little thought Not even a full book - its a novella ...and even then at least 1/4 of the mini book is excerpts from her other books. Very little story line. Balogh is definitely taking advantage of her fan base with this release.

Title: A wonderful, heart-warming story

Review: Count me among those Balogh fans who loved this book, especially the fact that it was the story of an older hero and heroine. Yes, there were the requisite giggling nieces and so forth, as well as some low-key hijinks among the young men. But the core of the story is the rediscovery by the hero and heroine that they still love each other after 35 years.

Two comments: While we get to know Matilda, who is both the same and different than she has been in prior books, the real surprise to me was the total about-face by her mother. I won't go into details so as not to be a spoiler but it was the biggest surprise of the book. Second, several reviewers above expressed disappointment that the book was so short. In her introduction, Balogh explained that this was intended to be a novella. Since the hero and heroine had known each other, there was less plot to go through. No dastardly villains, no getting-to-know each other for the first time, no chases across the country.....in short, a shorter love story and, by necessity, a shorter book. Balogh had a story to tell, she told it beautifully and when it was over, the book ended.

Highly recommended - but do read the other stories, in order if possible. It will help tremendously in keeping the large cast of characters straight.

Review: If you enjoy endless internal dialogue with repeated exclamations, this book is for you. Not typical rich and descriptive Balogh. The last few of this authors' books have followed in the same trend. Done. No more. Sadly, classic Mary Balogh has moved in a new direction. We are reluctantly parting ways.

Title: Lady Matilda's Love Story

Review: Readers of Mary Balogh's 'Westcott' Family novels have been anticipating this novella telling the story of Lady Matilda Westcott (Ms. Balogh has always mentioned that this story would be a novella). In the previous stories in the series, Lady Matilda has been known as the maiden Aunt of the family, seemingly 'assigned' to the task of looking after the dowager Countess of Riverdale, Eugenia. Matilda's character in the earlier books started out being shown as a rather stodgy and fussy woman. However, there were also examples in the previous books that Matilda was supportive of the love matches in her family, and a romantic. Then in the book, Someone to Love, she takes a rather daring step to approach a man, Charles, Viscount Dirkson about the family situation of his 'natural' son who has married, Abigail, (a now illegitimate) beloved member of the Westcott family. This is the first time readers have actual evidence that Lady Matilda has a romantic past. This novella is a revelation of how this past romance might be brought back to life to become part of Matilda's future. The story is told in ten chapters; it is a true novella. Because of the rather 'sketchy' past of Viscount Dirkson, I don't believe that the story could be told in any other way, and all the pertinent information of Matilda and Charles' past is given in these well written ten chapters. // I thought the letter at the beginning of the novella that Ms. Balogh wrote to her readers about how she came to love Matilda as a 'real person' who needed to have her own story was a lovely touch. This book also contains chapters from the other Westcott stories, and because of the beginning letter from Ms. Balogh they were not needed for this book. Nevertheless, this is a lovely, well written, sweet and satisfying novella.

Review: Just a heads up that the book is much shorter than the rest in the series. A full third is chapters from the previous books. Still looking forward to reading but it was really disappointing to discover it's not a full novel.

Review: I've always loved Mary Balough's writing. This is no exception. Cute story about a middle aged couple finding love again. But it was very short. The rest of the pages are filled with the first chapters of all previous books in the series. That was a disappointment.
