Review: Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first. When writing a history of any description, a competent author finds way more material than should ever go into the book. A good writer of history needs the ability to separate the important material from the excess. A good writer of history also needs the ability to summarize. The author of this book clearly lacks both of these talents. Does the reader need to find out every detail of every journey Nelson made on land, including what the band played? Does the reader need an artistic evaluation of every painting ever made of Nelson? I don't think so, and I suspect a large number of other readers won't think so either. On the other hand, when describing naval battles, do readers need charts to follow the action? I think here the answer is yes, they do. Too bad in the Kindle edition there weren't any.Okay, now for the good stuff. Buried in this mountain of unnecessary detail, the author gives a well rounded view of Nelson as a person and as a naval leader. This book also is quite thorough at providing the political background for the naval conflict between England and its enemies. In the process the reader gets reminded just how primitive communications were in the early nineteenth century. Wind powered boats and ships had to keep Nelson in contact with everyone. On a good day one of these vessels reached speeds of under ten miles an hour. Since he was based in southern Italy for much of decade covered by this book, everyone who mattered was more than a thousand miles away. That meant Nelson had to make a large number of decisions, both naval and political, without waiting for instructions. His superiors had to rely on his good sense and he seldom disappointed them.When it came to good sense, realizing that a healthy, well fed and well trained sailor was infinitely more useful than the alternative was another sign that Nelson had a great deal of it. Whatever his undertaking, he got it right more often than he got it wrong.In the end, I recommend this book, but I also recommend that readers be prepared to skip over the material the author couldn't bring himself to throw away and concentrate on the heart of this important and fascinating story.

Review: This is the second of a two-volume set devoted to the remarkable life of Admiral Nelson. The announced goal of the author was to return to the primary sources and thereby provide a clearer, more accurate view of this remarkable leader of the 18th Century British navy. To a great extent, the author succeeds. The first volume, Nelson: A Dream of Glory, explores Nelson's early years and uses these events to shed light on his later behavior. I gave this second volume three stars because the author apparently ran out of gas. The tone and pace is often encyclopedic; of interest to Nelson buffs, but does not compete favorably with accounts advanced by other authors. The books strength is that it chronicles and analyzes many of the features of Horatio Nelson's atypical personal life. However, it adds little to our understanding of Nelson's later naval battles. A more serious problem is the uneven pace of the narrative. Pages 630 to 730 are extraneous and should be deleted. Just as the intensity of the narrative thread began to swell around page 625 with the feint of French Admiral Pierre Villeneuve, the author interrupts the narrative with a 100 page digression that explores the character and leadership style of Admiral Nelson. I am amazed that this section made it past the scrutiny of the editor. Before reading this second volume, I would recommend reading more concise and engaging accounts of Trafalgar such as Roy Adkins fine book, Nelson's Trafalgar.

Review: I had a choice to buy this book new or used and I decided on a new copy since the first volume of the biography was excellent. This copy arrived with the pages already yellowing!!!!!! It may not have been used but it was sitting on a shelf for a long time! It should NOT have been sold at full price!!!!!!

Review: Very detailed, but very well written. I thought I know enough about Lord Nelson, but now I really know all the details of his work and life. I think back on the 1800s and think they were pretty primitive. Well, they were in some ways, but very sophisticated in others. Not the operating of the ships of the line, but in the diplomatic and daily life of those in government. The multi-faceted challenges of staying ahead of France were very demanding. A long book, but a very good one.

Review: Excellent book so far! Writing is terrific picking up exactly where the 1st book left off, vivid descriptions of battles and the times of the age, provoking thoughts, and the flaws of a great man/hero. If you like historical biographies I highly recommend.
