Review: I really wanted to like this book. I’ve been anticipating it ever since I read The Love Interest. As I started reading the book, I made the terrible discovery that the blurb/summary of the book on almost every website had spoiled the big plot twist. (SPOILER) Why market the book as child of a mobster and child of a cop when that’s supposed to be a surprise?? (END SPOILER)This story has all the elements in it to be such a good YA book. However, not only did the spoiler leave me confused and deeply upset as I read it, but the story also felt rushed. The first two parts of the book were lovely and genuinely sweet... part three on the other hand? Not so much. The novel doesn’t spend enough time lingering on the effects of Matt’s decision and rushes the ending. I think even just one or two more chapters would’ve helped with this issue.Overall, disregarding then spoiler, this story had a good base. The relationship between the protagonists was sweet and Matt felt REAL. Having conflicting emotions from one moment to the next is so real. However, it lacked a level of character development and plot building that I suspect could have been solved through just a few extra chapters.I look forward to reading more from this author as he grows as a writer because I genuinely think he has amazing ideas. They’re so innovative and intriguing. However, he still has ways to go.

Review: Following in the footsteps of his previous effort "The Love Interest", Cale Dietrich's "The Friend Scheme" is another LGBT-themed YA novel that features two engaging leads, a hefty plot set-up, and a pretty decent, fast-paced read that is once more told enjoyably enough to have the reader flipping pages. Like with "The Love Interest", however, this book had a few issues and, much like its predecessor, the wrap-up at the end of the climax left a bit to be desired.Good stuff first: "The Friend Scheme" was actually better written than "The Love Interest" (which I still very much enjoyed). It's always nice to see an author actually honing their craft, and there were a few mistakes made in "TLI" that Dietrich consciously did not make in "TFS", so he seems to actually be able to take constructive criticism. This is again a bit of a trope-y setup: Matt Miller, our primary protagonist/narrator, is the son of the most powerful mob family in an undisclosed city in Florida. The Miller family is in the midst of a blood feud with the Donovan family, and Matt wants nothing to do with his life of crime and dreams of running away to Los Angeles to get away from his birthright and pursue his love of film. Enter Jason, a mysterious and almost too-perfect potential love interest to draw the adorably awkward and quirky Matt out of his shell, though Jason is very obviously not all that he seems.Just like with "TLI", Dietrich provides a really rich set-up: Matt is a teenaged boy, and can be a bit whiny and a bit emo at times like all teens, but he's got a real reason for his angst. The novel opens on his family dragging him along as they pretty graphically Molotov-cocktail one of their rivals' businesses and raze it to the ground, and you know from the jump that his grandfather, the former "boss" of the Millers, was brutally gunned down outside a grocery store in broad daylight. Matt knows the Donovans sell narcotics to kids, so they do cross lines that his family doesn't, but he also knows that his family are no saints and very adroitly points out that neither side is really in the right. Added to this is that Matt cannot simply run away -- his enemies might find him and exploit him, and, as we get deeper into the story, we see that Matt might not like his family's 'job', per se, but he fiercely loves his father and his older brother Luke, who is actually pretty fantastic as far as older brothers go if you look past the mobster mentality he fully embraces. The secret and forbidden aspect of the relationship between Matt and Jason is very charged and very sweet at the same time; it's handled a bit more adult-ly than the relationship in Dietrich's previous effort and draws you in a bit more. There's moments of real frustration, but there's also some pretty wicked plot twists thrown in that keeps the reader on their toes (some previous frustrated reviewers have revealed that the publisher accidentally spoiled the biggest twist in the original blurb, unfortunately; it wasn't spoiled for me, thankfully). As things heat up between Matt and Jason and they both naturally distrust the other in the roles they've been cast, the battle between Miller and Donovan gets worse and more personal. Now, for the bad -- as I've mentioned before, Dietrich seems to have a really great handle on set-up and world-building, to the point that the stakes in these dramas are high enough to have you really rooting for the characters and feeling for them in the tough spots they're in. Where both "TLI" and "TFS" fumble is on reaching the climax. This story does have a conclusion, and even a somewhat satisfying one, but that conclusion is reached way too quickly and waaaay too neatly. There was a serious missed opportunity for a fatal twist at the end involving side character Cassidy, who was set up to be a good player in the game then sort of...vanished. Rather like "TLI", the big feud between Miller and Donovan was set to be an explosive ending, but it's like Dietrich wanted to pull his punches at the end for the sake of his characters' endings. Jason had a lot of family drama that was never fully explored, and the epilogue was barely two pages long when frankly it should have been like fifteen.A good comparison for both of these novels so far is actually to Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn", which spends most of its time ramping up to an epic battle between the heroes and villains only to side-step it at the end because she couldn't bear to kill off any of her beloved characters and wanted a fairytale like ending. Dietrich doesn't take it that far in either novel, but if he's going to keep creating these super-interesting dramatic situations to put his characters through, he's got to be able to follow it through to an ending that might not actually be comfortable or without heartbreak. I genuinely felt for Matt and for Jason, and there were good things about their endings, but they also didn't feel entirely earned because the ending was tied off so neatly. That said, "The Friend Scheme" was a very enjoyable read and I do seriously stand by my statement that it's a step up in terms of overall writing style, pacing, dialogue, and tone from Dietrich's debut effort "The Love Interest", so it's obvious that he is working at honing his craft as a writer instead of remaining a one-note show, and that's very refreshing to see. I'll remain very interested to see where Dietrich goes from here as an author and I definitely plan on reading his next novel.

Review: Friend scheme 4.5⭐️The twists, the turns, the LIES!Matt is the kid of one of the baddest criminals and right now and for as long as anyone remebers they HATE the Donovans. So when Matt makes a friend, a possible boyfriend hes worried he might be a Donovan and their friendship will be over. But Matt really likes Jason so decides its worth the trouble to be friends even if he might be a Donovan. The love interest was one of my favorites when i read it and this is no different. The Friend scheme was great!

Review: I really liked this book. I finished it within like two days because I couldn’t put it down. That being said I thought it was a tad rushed at the end. I feel like the conflict going on in this book was a little too big to be so easily fixed. Other than that i loved it.

Review: This book has a couple cute moments, but it is seriously lacking in cohesive plot, character development, and realistic story arc. It’s extremely rushed at times and there’s a lot of filler. The main events seem dull, and the dull events are unbearable. Wanted to like it but couldn’t.
