Review: I don't typically review books, but I wanted to review this book because I almost didn't read the book because of some of the reviews which criticize the author for not honestly addressing criticisms of Chogyam Trungpa. After reading the book, I believe those reviews miss the bigger learning. While Jack Kornfield only addresses some of Trungpa's specific short-comings in passing, I believe more importantly, he spends considerable efforts to convey the fact that many of the revered Buddhist spiritual leaders are far from perfect and are very human. As the title of Chapter 21 says "Even the Best Meditators Have Old Wounds to Heal."

Finally, if you do buy this book, I would mention that I thought that the book starts a little slow, but gains momentum as you read. In particular, I really enjoyed Part Four: Practicing the Dharma in the West, where Jack Kornfield addresses some topics typically ignored or only addressed in passing in other Buddhist literature such as sexual practices, drug use, and achieving enlightenment versus having enlightened moments.

Review: This will be read many times by me. At times I felt I was listening to Jack Kornfield in my own home as his compassionate voice comes through on so many of the pages. From antidepressants to meditation, every subject is dealt with in a non judging, informative, and expansive way. The book left me feeling light and hopeful. I didn't feel as if I needed to "do" a lot of anything that I am not already doing. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to "awakening", instead there are many options and interesting paths to discover. I am so thankful for people like Jack Kornfield who have done a tremendous amount of work and share what they have learned with us.

Title: Maybe Good If You're New to

Review: I read Jack Kornfield's "The Wise Heart" and really got a lot from it. It's a bit academic, but it's a wide ranging discussion of Buddhism and how it applies to daily life, full of anecdotes from Kornfield's experiences as a practitioner and teacher. So I agree whole-heartedly with the many positive comments previous reviewers have made about Kornfield, as a wise, gentle, and FUNNY teacher. But I don't agree that this book is close to his best, especially if you're familiar with Buddhism. The first few chapters of "Bringing Home the Dharma" are pretty much word for word taken from previous writings, and so far the chapters on parenting and politics are quite basic. I respect Kornfield as a teacher, but honestly, if you are a student of Buddhism you may find, as I did, that his points flow so obviously from Buddhist teachings and practices that they seem, well, facile. Reading other reviews and the titles of later chapters gives me hope that I will find more richness as I read, but so far I am disappointed - and disappointed that I'm disappointed!

Review: This book is mind blowing. I cannot stress enough how important this book has become to my current way of thinking. It's quite a dense read, however, there's a plethora of wisdom in between the pages. If you wish to focus on personal growth, this is a must have.

Title: How to use Eastern techniques in Western culture

Review: This book is a good reference for understanding the evolution of Buddhist teachings and ways you can use it in any place or culture you find yourself in.

My interest in reading it was specifically its use in Western culture. The title is fitting and delivers what it said it would. My favorite focus in the book was mindfulness and compassion.

It would be good for beginners as well as middle of the road seekers. It was worth the read and delivered helpful techniques that are immediately usable.

Review: I was loving this book until I got to chapter 16, Celebrating Chogyam Trungpa, but when I got to these words, I could go no further. "He was also peculiar. He drank; he was a womanizer. He was very open about these things." Why is it somehow OK to say that someone used women, but that only made him "peculiar" but if we said "he was a sodomizer, he was a pedophile, he was a rapist; he was a liar; he was a thief; he was racist etc. etc. we would not say he was "peculiar" we would say other things.... as if cheating on your wife and using other women was not a problem. I am sorry, I have been womanized and I have used men like they have used me... It's wrong, not "peculiar"--I could not trust his judgment on anything he said in the first part of the book and I could not finish it... it does not seem that the movement to consider women as human beings has come as far as we thought it had.

Review: Enjoyable reading the book. I am not finished reading it as there is much to be absorbed and integrated into one's lifestyle. As I read it, I can envision what Jack Kornfield is saying and I begin to think of my own life and what I have achieved. It is not a book that you can breeze through. There is much to absorb.
