Review: THE MATCHMAKER'S GIFT is one of those books whose depth, laced through what seems like a feel-good "easy-read," becomes apparent as one turns the pages—as I did, reading far into the night. It has much to say about how to live a good life—to do right by those you care about, to trust, pay attention, wait. Many of the elements in the story are familiar, yet there was a wonderful freshness to the telling, original and new. The two story lines wove together beautifully, with an entirely satisfying ending that left me liking both protagonists equally well. Much more here than I expected, skillfully written, filled with hope and delight.

Review: I have loved every book this author has written, and this one is no exception.

Even though I had a busy work day, I still managed to finish this book in one day. I just didn’t want to put it down.

This book jumps between the life of Sara, a Jewish immigrant on the Lower East Side in the 1910s, and her granddaughter, Abby, in 1994.

Sara has a gift…she’s a matchmaker. She can literally see when people are soulmates. She believes Abby had the gift as well.

The book takes us through both Abby’s story and Sara’s, and I honestly can’t say which I loved more. I saw a quote today that says something along the lines of “when you love a book, it’s always too short.” That is absolutely true of this book. I could have lived in this book forever.

I know this book will stick with me for many weeks, and I’ll definitely be comparing every other book I read to this one for a while!

Review: The Matchmaker’s Gift is a book that I needed at this time in my life. As you get older you realize that love is a difficult and complex phenomenon. This book brings you hope. I love how there are two parallel stories, one from the past and one from the present. The author truly did her research because I felt that I was in the room with each of these characters, feeling their emotions, smelling their foods. The characters and settings are developed in a way that is familiar. This book bring light and hope in a world that can be dark. May we all carry a glimmer of light to shine through.

Concession among 12 members was that The Matchmakers Gift by Lynda Cohen Loigman was told from two female perspectives: Sara, (circa 1920) a Jewish Immigrant trying to live by tradition in NY LOWER east Side and Abby (1994) a lawyer. Both reveal how family, time and place effectively influence their decisions.

Review: For the first time EVER, everyone attending our book club discussion gave a book the SAME rating: FOUR STARS for The Matchmaker’s Gift by Lynda Cohen Loigman!

It’s a lovely novel following matchmaking Sara from ages 10 through 94 and her granddaughter Abby, who in 1994 is rethinking a demanding career that is recently at odds with her heart.

The descriptions of Sara’s life in New York City during the early 1900’s are detailed and fascinating, and Sara’s determination to be a matchmaker in a male-dominated field is inspiring. Full of talent and wisdom, Sara makes a difference in countless lives and marriages.

Abby is talented as well, successfully climbing the corporate ladder as a lawyer. As she learns more about her grandmother’s matchmaking past, however, her career helping high profile clients with their divorces and pre-nups conflicts with her true desire to help people find happiness.

The two timelines work well together in A Matchmaker’s gift, and even though the ending wraps up a little too conveniently, it’s an enjoyable novel filled with caring, strong women and lots of hope and love.

Review: This is a beautifully told woman’s fiction story with a touch of magical realism. It follows the lives of Sara and Abby; two Jewish women with a unique ability of being able to find a souls other half. While this book isn’t technically a romance, it is romantic in a sense that these women have been responsible for numerous love matches spanning over decades.

It is told in a dual point of view and depicts events of both the past and present. There were many obstacles involved, but once these woman discovered a match, they stopped at nothing to make it happen. It was impossible to ignore their calling.

I loved watching all the little individual stories unfold, but I found myself anxiously waiting to see if these women could find a love match of their own. Would their abilities stretch to themselves or would they only be able to find love for others?

I’ve only called one other author this… but Lynda is a masterful story teller and I fully plan on reading her back list.
