Title: EWW Strings - The Ables Book 2 in 700 words or less (no spoilers)

Review: I liked the first Ables book, but saw that it had some serious flaws. On the one hand, it had some very interesting and unique characters, with a unique premise for a YA book. On the other hand, the plot was incredibly predictable, and the world building left quite a bit to be desired. And unfortunately, the sequel seems to have gotten worse rather than better.

Three years have passed since the first Ables book began, and blind telekinetic Phillip has a lot of problems. The DHS has begun monitoring Custodian activity, politicians are calling them criminals that need to be feared and reigned in, he's still trying to cope with PTSD from the events of the last book, and his hormones are in overdrive thanks to his new crush Emmaline. As school starts up, superheroes start disappearing, and everyone expects the DHS is involved. It ends up being down to Philip and the rest of the Ables to figure out what's going on and how to fix it.

So, to start with the good aspects, I liked the new characters Emmaline, as well as the now more involved in the plot Penelope. Both had a fair amount of character development and felt like natural members of the group. Scott was also able to show Phillip as a flawed leader, allowing him to make some mistakes that were believable, as well as the chance to make up for them and grow as a person.

Overall though, the book is just a complete mess. To start with, the tone is all over the place. The chapters in the first have turn from 'the adults are disappearing, we could be next, oh my god this is so scary' to 'game practice sure went well today, maybe I should ask the girl I like out on a date' on a dime, making it really hard to build the tension. This plotting also means the adults are even more useless than they were in the last book. There was no effort put in to building relationships with the public to fend off all the propaganda used against them. And once people started disappearing, there was no effort made to protect the kids or even visibly fight back.

Then there's the moral message. The book tries to paint Custodians as unfairly persecuted, but Scott ends up ruining the message by having the kids do something really, really stupid that just proves that they really did need to be monitored.

The main villain, once revealed, is one dimensional, stupid, and you knew who it was going to be from the beginning. She goes through a cliche villain monologue while being recorded, in an affront to common sense, and had one chance to achieve her goal earlier in the book that she didn't take for no explained reason.

And the ending...look, I hated the ending, and I can't explain why without saying what it is, so skip the next paragraph if you don't want to know.

START SPOILERS

So, after the main villain gives her monologue when she should have been getting the drop on the group, she takes over Henry's mind, because his telepathy enhance her powers allowing her to control multiple people at once. Fine. But the only solution that they can come up with is to have Henry kill himself using Phil's powers. It's ridiculously melodramatic, it's framed as some of the worst fridging I've seen in a book, the story ends before the rest of the cast has any opportunity to address it, and it comes off as pretty tone deaf for an author who, in his videos, tries to be respectful to people with suicidal thoughts. I hate this type of cheap shock value.

END SPOILERS.

So that's it. I have to say I really didn't like this book.

Review: Overall a very well written book. There are some extreme laugh out loud moments and even some moments where you will cry and pretty much everything in between. I enjoyed all the characters and even some of the new characters had enough flesh on them that they felt real.

However, it took a while for the villain to show up and even longer to realize how things were being manipulated so the characters would do their bidding. It felt as if there were some chapters that were removed for space because there would be chapters in which the main character just talks to the audience and nothing of material happens. And then there are some big events that occur over the space of a paragraph or two. I think if the book was longer and more fleshed out the ultimate realization would have had more of an impact. There was a strong sense of something missing throughout the entire book which festered when reading.

But with that being said, it's one of those books that you can't put down. You can feel the sense of urgency from the main cast of Ables and so you want to read along and figure out if they make it.

Title: Too short, but awesome!

Review: I couldn't put this book down, metaphorically as my first time through was in audio form.

The story picks up 3 years later and teasingly fills in some of the gaps of what has happened. It introduces a bunch of new characters, has a bunch of delightfully awkward teenager interactions, and some truly epic action.

I'd recommend this to fans of the franchise and of the genre in general.

My main gripe is that it's about half the length of the first book, but don't let that deter you.

Review: Great book you won’t be able to put it down. It’s definitely a recommend. Twist ending coming your direction. Definitely a five star recommend.

SPOILERS

I’m still reeling from that twist ending. I feel like the book could have used a few more chapters to build up the friendship between Phillip and Henry even more, but regardless, Henry’s moment at the end had the shock value I think Jeremy Scott was intending. Although, one plot point I don’t understand is why Ettinger couldn’t just take control of Henry’s powers on that first flight. I mean, she was there causing the engines to go out (somehow) and Henry was there, too, unless she just didn’t know what he could do until they were already off of the plane and out of her reach. Still, this book is a definite recommend and I’m looking forward to the next installment.

Review: I bought the first book because I love cinemasins. I bought the second book because the Ables story is fantastic and original. It's an easy read that sucks you in and makes you feel apart of the story. It's a great book for all ages. I can't wait for book three.
