The text was composed around the year 370 BC, and in translations, Anabasis is rendered The March of the Ten Thousand or The March Up Country. Xenophon accompanied the Ten Thousand, a large army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger, who intended to seize the throne of Persia from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Though Cyrus' mixed army fought to a tactical victory at Cunaxa in Babylon (401 BC), Cyrus was killed, rendering the actions of the Greeks irrelevant and the expedition a failure. Stranded deep in Persia, the Spartan general Clearchus and the other Greek senior officers were then killed or captured by treachery on the part of the Persi

Review: I have heard accounts of this great book at second hand ever since high school, but this is the first time I have read it from beginning to end. It exceeded expectations. The original manly adventure story, all the more interesting as an eyewitness account of actual events.
Since there is some dispute among reviewers on the merits of Dakyns as translator, let me quote a few passages from before and after the big battle on the plains of Babylon:
It was now mid-day, and the enemy was not yet in sight; but with the approach of afternoon was seen dust like a white cloud, and after a considerable interval a black pall as it were spread far and high above the plain. As they came nearer, very soon was seen here and there a glint of bronze and spear-points; and the ranks could plainly be distinguished. On the left were troopers wearing white cuirasses. That is Tissaphernes in command, they said, and next to these a body of men bearing wicker-shields, and next again heavy-armed infantry, with long wooden shields reaching to the feet. These were the Egyptians, they said, and then other cavalry, other bowmen; all were in national divisions, each nation marching in densely-crowded squares. And all along their front was a line of chariots at considerable intervals from one anotherβthe famous scythe-chariots, as they were namedβhaving their scythes fitted to the axle-trees and stretching out slantwise, while others protruded under the chariot-seats, facing the ground, so as to cut through all they encountered. The design was to let them dash full speed into the ranks of the Hellenes and cut them through.
[Not much later, the battle over]:
The soldiers furnished themselves with food (and drink) as best they mightβfalling back on the baggage animals, and cutting up oxen and asses. There was no lack of firewood; they need only step forward a few paces from the line where the battle was fought, and they would find arrows to hand in abundance, which the Hellenes had forced the deserters from the king to throw away. There were arrows and wicker shields also, and the huge wooden shields of the Egyptians. There were many targets also, and empty wagons left to be carried off. Here was a store which they were not slow to make use of to cook their meat and serve their meals that day.
Dakyns, a student of Jowett's, does a fine job of rendering Xenophon's simple, sublime style. A case can surely be made for a more literal translation, for those who believe a writer as careful as Xenophon should be translated hyper-carefully. As an introduction to an amazing and beautiful story, however, Dakyns is most serviceable. Everyone should get this!

Review: Xenophon may have embellished a bit to cast himself in a better light and the situations more dire, but if so I thank him.
The backstory is around ten thousand Greek soldiers joined with Cyrus the Younger's mercenary army in a bid to take the Persian throne for himself. Cyrus in his own right is an fascinating person, but sadly he was cut down in the middle of a battle. The Greeks found themselves in the middle of hostile territory, miles and miles from home, without their patron, with every man's hand against them.
Then the Persian king's satrap Tissaphernes lures the Greek leader and top generals into a trap, killing them, and throwing the rest into despondent disarray.
This is were Xenophon gets involved. He gets the army to organize, elect new leadership, and get moving. He embodies the idea that "a good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week" as he gets the men up and going.
Throughout the rest of their journey, Xenophon's account shows men striking a balance between the top down structure needed in an army and acting on the best interests of the individual soldiers. This isn't an ordered democracy or republic, more akin to the code of the pirates. If you do this, and survive, you get a cut of the profits. They adjust and try different things as they cross through hostile and neutral territories, but they end up picking their original plan each time. A few minor modifications, but the same basic idea.
In the end, Xenophon gets the survivors home. The book just kind of ends, which isn't atypical for the style.
Xenophon is honest, brave, and true. I have no idea how much of that is true, since he's telling the story, but I'm willing to accept he was sufficiently accurate. He and Cyrus act as Greek ideals, though Cyrus was Persian, of what leaders should be and what solid leadership looks like. True to allies, generously open handed with friends, honors word, firm in negotiations, and unflagging in the face of adversity.
Highly recommended

Review: I first heard of this book while reading Victor David Hansonβs βCarnage and Cultureβ. I have read other Greek texts, such as The Peloponnesian War, Herodotus, Iliad and Odyssey. I found this to be a fairly enjoyable read, almost like an adventure story. The story is told by Xenophon, an Athenian aristocrat who was part of a Greek mercenary Army and eventually a general in it. It is the historical account of a mercenary Greek army, marching into the Persian Empire around 400 BC, at the behest of Artataxes, the brother of the Persian emperor Cyrus. Artataxes wants to dethrone his brother and is intent on using the Greek mercenaries to achieve his goal. The expedition pushes deep into modern day Iraq near Babylon, where in a decisive battle, Artataxes is killed. Then the leaders of the Greeks are killed under a truce flag by the Persians. The remaining mercenary army must find its way back to Greece, with no logistical support and basically fighting a running retreat battle.
I am told this book is still read in military academies. It gives great insight into leadership, adversity, goal orientation, and refusal to give in when the odds are stacked against you.
I downgrade the book one star due to the last 20% or so. The last part kind of dragged, was a little difficult to follow. I bought this in a kindle format, and as can be found with that format, there were weird editing that seemed to end sentences mid-sentence as you turned the pages. There was a really weird footnote convention, instead of end notes. And of course the lack of maps made the story a bit more difficult to follow. I bought a paperback edition when I was nearly finished with this book, hoping for detailed maps etc. However the paperback edition was small (about 6 inches by 8 inches). I had been hoping for a good edition like the one I have for the Peloponnesian war.
At any rate this is still a good book to read and I recommend it.
