Review: Forgot where this book popped up in my various feeds but the synopsis, British warship chasing a French warship with a secret cargo during the Napoleanic wars and being shadowed by an alien spacecraft. Well I'm a sucker for a far fetched story like this. Being a fan of Dan Simmons novel The Terror set in a similar time and facing a supernatural creature I figure I'd give it a read. Much to my surprise I really enjoyed this tale even though it is a short read, 207 pages I believe, novella. Hopefully the author will continue the story into a full length novel. Loved the characters, Captain Burns, Kyte, Gibbons, the beautiful Lavinia. Though not a perfect tale, things get out of control at the end, I found it to be a page turner especially the second half of the book. Also noticed several typos along the way but nothing crazy. Hey, a British warship during the 1700's doing battle with an alien race is pretty cool in my book. If you're into historical science fiction this is a great read. Recommended.

Review: I picked up this book because it sounded like a fascinating premise - the age of sail technology encountering extraterrestrial creatures and ships. I have to say I loved the overall adventure and the detail and obvious research the author must have put into what it would be like to be on a sailing ship. However there were a lot of distracting typos, editing issues and toward the end I think the plot kinda made some strange leaps and assumptions. I know this is kind of a "prequal" and short introduction to his other books, and maybe I should have read the others first. Maybe that would have helped me understand the ending and accept it better so my impressions might not be what other readers who previously read other books in this series will get out of this. Overall it was a fun read but beware that this seemed like it could have had a little more editing and review before release, and it probably would help to have been familiar with the other books in the series first.

Review: I first read The Protocol, which is the sequel to "50 Degrees South", but which I believe was written by the author before 50 Degrees South. I rated The Protocol 4 stars, but I enjoyed "50 Degrees South" even more and recommend other readers follow the same reading sequence. "The Protocol" introduces the main characters of the Sci Fi series, but "50 Degrees South", is a better read, so you will not be disappointed if you read "The Protocol" first and then "%0 Degrees South". The scenes and images that M. M. Holt is able to capture in such a short book are remarkable. My only disappointment with both books was that the final corrections could have been better, but I guess that goes with the territory of writers trying to get started in a very tough business. Well done M. M and I am looking forward to the next Alexander Burns book. Very original and highly recommended.

Review: What a curious and entertaining fusion between a ripping sea yarn from the Napoleonic era and Golden Age Sci-Fi. It’s vivid and at times quite refreshing. It has the cinematic quality of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and Forbidden Planet combined. Taking a few bold leaps, it draws you along with the story like a moth to a flame. I was entertained.

Review: After reading a brief summary on a Facebook ad I decided to take a chance on this boom. What anon stop rush. Set during b the Napo.eonic Wars in the early 1800s, CaptainAlex Burns is dispatched to recover a mysterious sea chest from an enemy French ship. What ensues next is a great adventure that is hard to put down. Think Patrick O Brien meets JJ Abrams with a touch of Clive Cussler yet the story is all MM Holt. I am looking forward to everything the mind of Holt produces in the future.

Review: I liked this story for the description of life on a sailing ship! Also, the specifics of British navel command and engaging in sea warfare. The science fiction of aliens from another world/galaxy was ok, but a bit of a stretch using cannons against a starship!

Review: An interesting idea: Napoleonic British Sailors involved in some kind of intergalactic plot, but the execution is poor. Despite being really short, the novelette drags. Could be summarized in about 30 pages. Nothing is really resolved, nor do we really are about any of the characters, who are intensely underdeveloped.
