A continuing struggle for survival in a time long past.

Former Federal Air Marshall Stephen Mason has again done the impossible. He has passed back through an unexplainable time portal and reunited with the three people he cares about most.

It’s 1720, Charles Town, Carolina Colony, a time and place fraught with hardships and hazards. Carving out a life here will be challenging, especially for these modern-day transplants. There are few people they can trust, none in whom they can confide. But they have each other. And they have a rice plantation.

With no apparent way home, the plan is si

Title: I'm lowering my Chin for this review
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on September 8, 2020
Review: If you read the book (or the prequel), you'll understand my title. And I'm sort of reviewing books 1 and 2 of "A Ripple in Time" together. By the way, I think the title is too similar to "A Wrinkle in Time".

PLOT
Airliner jumps back about 300 years, crashes, survivors are forced to make their way in pre-Revolutionary War America. Not a bad premise. In some ways, the books almost read like an accounting of events. There is build-up and tension, but it's resolved before the books conclude. And so I found myself waiting for something to happen to the characters as the pages dwindled but....nothing did. It was sort of odd, actually.

The second book picks up where the first left off. You will need to suspend some disbelief in order to accept how the main character time travels. Granted, any time travel requires suspension of disbelief, but the author creates a ruleset for their story. That's fine. But they need to make the ruleset believable and consistent. I'm willing to accept the circumstances of time travel for the airliner based on how the author described it, even the second time was OK. But the third...mmm, I don't know...it felt like a violation of the rules he created.

By the far, the MOST intriguing aspect of The Planters was an encounter that happens near the end of the book between the cast and a tavern owner. Frankly, I think this should have been developed more and been more central to the plot. Also, the way it happens should have been more subtle. Anybody paying attention will understand it. It felt like the author had a good idea (he did) but was overly eager to share it with the reader and as a result, it was a bit clumsy. There's nothing wrong with pulling the readers along with the characters and making them wonder. And honestly, it felt odd that the characters didn't focus on the event the way I did...which suggests the characters are too dumb to make the connection (I don't think they are), or the author wasn't sure what he wanted to do with the idea just yet.

So essentially, this book focuses on how the original core survivors continue to survive and make a life in the early 1700s. It's not a fast paced read. It's engaging enough. If you like time travel, it's not bad for a day or two of reading. Overall, a pleasant diversion.

FEEDBACK FOR AUTHOR
I hope you write a book 3 as I'd like to see where you go from here. I do have some thoughts. First, please, for the love of God, stop using the word 'chin'. You're overuse of the word is VERY DISTRACTING. Really. Please, find a better way for non-verbal communication. Second, we understand the characters have travelled back in time. There is ZERO need to remind us that non-central characters are wearing period clothing. You did this a number of times and it, too, is very distracting.

Next, I am assuming you're hint drop of Charleston, I mean Charles Town, is relevant. It's clever. I liked it and it hit the mark. That said, for what felt like such a biggie...it should have been explored. If that was me living that reality, do I really just brush it off? Unlikely, the characters should have dealt with it. Maybe you weren't ready to, or maybe you didn't intend to make it part of the story. But I think it should have become a focus of the story or at least a follow-up. Assuming that IS your plan, then it should have been more subtle...or come very near to the end of the story and left us wondering what the heck was going on. I think you dropped the ball a bit on that one.

Overall, not bad. You did ask for feedback, I offered, maybe you'll even see this. I like the premise. It needs some polish and the characters could use more development. Editing...please, no more chin or reminders about 1700s characters wearing 1700s clothing. And yes, I'll pick up the next one if you publish.

================
Edit...

Right, so after I wrote this I was browsing the author's other books and see Book 3 was published about a week ago. Right after I picked up and read the first two. Hence my feedback is irrelevant as it pertains to my thoughts on where the story may (could) go if a Book 3 is published. Hilarious. But the timing is intriguing nonetheless.

Fair enough. I'll be back after reading the next one. And I'm intrigued enough to have a go at the author's other work.

Title: Another fun, interesting read !
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on April 10, 2020
Review: I have enjoyed this series and hoping for another soon. My father’s family came over in the early 1700’s to SC, and I lived there for about 5 years after leaving NY at 15 and getting my own rented house by age 16. I had no money, but I did work. Everything was a lot cheaper there, still is, especially gas, and I have a house there now, but live in PA. My mother’s family came over from Ireland to NY in the early 1900’s. I’ve seen pictures of one of the fish markets they owned with an olden time grocers or produce truck out front and the family at the windows upstairs and the male at the door with his apron on. I’ve read a letter from a merchant marine to my grandfather ( they sailed together all around the world) this friend told him about being in California after the big quake and how devastated it was. Was that 1918? Not sure anymore. So, these tie ins of family in the south, a great, great grandfather in the civil war and father having grown up in the south, meeting my mother in NY when he was in the hospital during an injury from war in the navy (WWII ) and my love of That area in SC and having lived along the beach on Long Island, NY, just makes me visualize so much of the , β€œway back then” times, that I really enjoyed the escape back in time. Two of my three daughter’s are also reading the series. They are 32,34,36. So, no matter what age you are, you can enjoy this story line. It gives you all the β€œgood feels” and excitement that you want in a story. Thanks so much for my jump back in time for awhile. I do love time travel, whether it’s the Jurassic period, or living in a spaceship traveling to other worlds. I enjoy the thrill of them all !

Title: A decent second volume.
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on July 6, 2020
Review: This is the second novel in a series and to me it came across as somewhat disjointed. Partly this is because the first few chapters are in alternating viewpoints which requires significant skill on the author's part to weave together into a coherent whole. In this case the author came close, but didn't succeed in molding the chapters together quite as well as they could have been.

Once the different characters are all gathered together the viewpoint resolves to a singular protagonist and everything flows better.

The one plot device that most bugged me is the shipping barrels. Before steel barrels were introduced most people used wooden barrels made of wooden staves secured by iron bands at precise locations. If a barrel was empty the person shipping it would disassemble the parts into a stack of staves and barrel bands and the two end caps which weight the same but take up considerably less space. This was routinely done all through the 15th to early 20th century on sailing cargo vessels of all sizes. However in this novel empty barrels are repeatedly shipped fully assembled which requires significantly more labor in moving the empties.

Title: A history lesson with a twist

Review: It’s hard to write a review without giving away spoilers but the accuracy of history is spot on. I’ve googled many of the characters from 1720 to find that the author did his homework. These books are teaching you history without even realizing it.
