Review: For document itself, I rate it 4/5 but I rate the Sophia Press version 3/5. The following review first considers the document and then the peculiarities of the Sophia Press version.

The first (Post-Synodal) Apostolic Exhortation of Pope St. John Paul II urges everyone in the Church to make the task of catechesis a high priority in hope of a catechetical renewal to strengthen the faith of the Church. This exhortation follows and communicates the fruits from the fourth general assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 1977, during the reign of Pope Paul VI. Although this exhortation was given in 1979, much of its content is still very applicable today. It is a helpful guide for understanding the nature of catechesis, its importance in the Church, and potential problems when the integrity of the content of catechesis is altered.

John Paul II begins chapter one of this exhortation highlighting the importance of christocentricity and its two aspects. Firstly, christocentricity in catechesis means that it is the person of Jesus Christ who is communicated. "What is taught by catechesis?" is not as accurate of a question as "Who is taught?" The late pontiff writes, "Accordingly, the definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ." Catechesis is not principally concerned with providing historical or factual knowledge about Jesus. Rather, christocentric catechesis has a goal to bring people into a relationship with Jesus Christ so that His disciples may know Him on a personal level. The second facet of Christocentricity in catechesis is that Christ's teachings are handed down and not one's own teachings or opinions. All of Jesus's life was a teaching for His disciples including His parables, prayers, silences, teachings, sufferings, and resurrection. In imitation of Jesus, the catechist transmits Jesus's teaching not only by words in a class setting but also by their deeds and behavior.

After summarizing catechesis in the history of the Church in chapter two, John Paul II provides a broad understanding of catechesis in chapter three. He defines catechesis as the "education of children, young people, and adults in the faith, which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted, generally speaking, in an organic and systematic way, with a view to initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life." These two elements of catechesis—education and Christian life—are a leitmotif throughout Catechesi Tradendae and highlight the importance of catechesis to enable Christians to live what has been taught.[^6] Intellectual study of the mystery of Christ finds fulfillment in following Him in the world today.

The Church exists to evangelize and John Paul II notes that it is a dynamic reality with several moments or stages. Catechesis is one of those stages to help mature the faith of a person who has recently accepted Jesus as Lord by studying Him and His teachings. Since catechesis is a stage or aspect of evangelization, the content of catechesis is the same proclamation of the Gospel found in evangelization. The late pope spends the rest of the chapter describing catechesis in relation to other aspects of the Church's pastoral mission including arousing faith in others, initiating people into a sacramental life, and the responsibility of ecclesial communities to provide environments for fruitful communion.

Chapter four of Catechesi Tradendae discusses the content of catechesis. The pope teaches that the source of the content of catechesis is found in "the Word of God transmitted in Tradition and the Scriptures." This content is also called the Deposit of Faith and it is also expressed in the creeds and Lord's prayer. John Paul II exhorts catechists not to omit or diminish anything from the content of faith so that it may maintain its integrity for others to come in contact with the living God and the late pope cautions against reducing the Catholic faith to what is held in common with other religions. In chapter five, the pope provides insights into the various situations of the human person including infancy, handicapped persons, and adulthood. He states that every person needs catechesis and notes that the principal form of catechesis is for adults because they can live the faith most fully.

The various ways and methods of catechesis in chapters six and seven provide more concrete advice for catechetical ministry. Pope John Paul II encourages the use of communications media to deliver catechetical instruction and he recognizes that faithful gatherings such as pilgrimages or bible studies are suitable situations for catechesis. The homily is a fitting opportunity to impart catechesis and books can make catechetical contributions. The pope laments that some books do not give an adequate presentation of the faith and he provides helpful criteria for future books and catechisms. Catechesis occurs in various contexts and the Pope John Paul II encourages a diversity of methods insofar as they do not adulterate the content of faith and personal opinions, especially political or social ones, should not be intermingled with the deposit of faith. Inculturation is an important method to bring the Good News to people of various cultures but the Gospel should not be altered by any cultural practice. Lastly, the pope notes the danger of an over-reliance on memorization for catechesis but he also remarks on its benefits and teaches that this method should not be abandoned.

Chapter eight of the pope's exhortation recognizes some difficulties imparting catechesis today. Language can be adapted for certain groups of people but not to modify the Gospel message. The pope encourages catechists to maintain the tension of realizing that "faith concerns things not yet in our possession" while maintaining certainty in the Word of God who does not deceive. Clergy, religious, and lay catechists are all encouraged to make catechesis a priority in chapter nine. Pope John Paul II even exhorts bishops not allow other concerns to diminish the catechetical efforts in their dioceses. The second half of this chapter addresses different settings for catechesis such as a parish or school and the pope requests that suitable resources are provided for these environments. Pope John Paul II concludes his first exhortation reminding the faithful that catechesis is the work of the Holy Spirit and presents Mary as a model for catechists.

The Sophia Institute Press Version of Catechesi Tradendae

The text of the exhortation published by Sophia Institute Press is the same as the Vatican website. The book is about as tall and wide as the ecclesial documents published by Paulist Books and Media, the publisher who produces papal and magisterial documents in blue, red, and green pocket-sized books. However, the font size is bigger in the Sophia Institute Press version which makes for easier reading. The foreword by Bishop Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Orange encourages readers of this exhortation to study the text and this is facilitated by the study questions at the end of the book. These questions mostly ask about the content of the exhortation to enable readers to process the salient points but some of the questions have the potential to lead a discussion in a group setting.

There are a couple drawbacks from Sophia Institute Press publication. The first is the book is unnecessarily thick. This is the result of thick pages and large margins at the top and bottom of the book. The worst quality of the book is citations. All endnotes for Catechesi Tradendae are found at the end of the book but the citations in the text abruptly end after note 71. If one is interested in where the pope cites something in the exhortation, the reader will need to consult a different version of the text such as the Vatican website.

Review: The other work of Pope John Paul II, which Sophia Institute Press is responsible for publishing is Catechesi Tradendae or On Catechesis in Our Time. This Apostolic Exhortation was issued exactly one year after his papacy started on October 16, 1979. Part One focuses on Jesus, who is the one, true Teacher. Part Two talks about the history of catechesis, how it started with the Apostles and is still the Church's mission today. Part Three gets down to the more nitty-gritty of catechesis like the aim of it and the need for it to be systematic. Part Four discusses Scripture and Tradition and also focuses on the Creed as an important source of doctrine and tool for catechesis. Part Five emphasizes the need for everyone to be catechized, which is very important to remember, as we tend to only focus on children generally. Part Six and Seven focus on ways to catechize. Part Eight reminds us to be joyful with this task, and Part Nine addresses each group of the Church (from bishops to parents) reminding each one that they too have a part in catechizing the world. This seems like a thick text to read, but it is only about 120 pages.

As a parent and a catechist, this book definitely spoke to me. A lot of people don't realize it, but it can be very discouraging to be a catechist. You see the children you teach once a week, if you're lucky. Most of their parents do little to no catechesis in the home, and you just pray the children walk away at the end of the year remembering some parts of the faith they didn't know before. This book helped remind me of why I became a catechist and re-energized me in a way. With a foreword by Bishop Kevin Vonn and study questions at the end, this is a book for everyone, because everyone is called to be a catechist, either in the home or the world.
