Review: As the title would suggest, Dr. Joseph Q. Jarvis’ ‘The Purple World: Healing the Harm in American Health Care’ is a thoughtful examination of the litany of issues currently plaguing the U.S. healthcare system.

Joseph Q. Jarvis, a longtime family practice doctor, leans heavily on his years of experience with the healthcare system, providing a bevy of personal anecdotes to further illustrate his points, not only making a compelling case for the inherent flaws in our current system, but also proposing a variety of solutions for change.

For his part, Jarvis’ personal story is well-written and conveyed with conviction. Unfortunately, as the book progresses, there are moments where the author’s statements feel less like facts and more like personal observations. While the author utilizes his fair share of citations, and there’s little doubt that he possesses a wealth of experience, Jarvis’ strong personal opinions, and anecdotal evidence color nearly every paragraph. For instance, Chapter Seven: Why Politicians Can’t Be Trusted, is little more than a long-winded rant that offers little in the way of actionable advice.

That all being said, chances are, if you’re reading this book, you already suspect (and probably agree) that the American healthcare system is deeply flawed, and Jarvis admirably offers a ton of thoughtful, logically-laid out solutions to what he sees as completely correctable issues.

Part memoir, part indictment—’The Purple World’ is, at the very least, a thought-provoking read, one that is sure to inspire a wide range of reactions. Be it a reaffirmation of what you already believe or a brand new perspective, if you take anything away from this book, it should be the unparalleled importance of being one’s own advocate when it comes to medical care.

Review: The Purple World: Healing the Harm in American Health Care is a politically charged and opinionated book discussing the author Joseph Q. Jarvis’ take on American health-care reform mostly based upon his life experience working in the health sector. From the onset of this book, it is apparent that Jarvis is passionate about health system reform and has publicly interacted extensively in his field. From articles to interviews, performing speeches to lobbying legislature, campaign interactions, rallies, and political conventions, readers are invited to enter Jarvis’ world regarding American health care. Fairly substantiated by research, readers have an opportunity to dive deep in one man’s experienced perspective on the subject in order to further refine ones own standpoint on this public health situation. I was a bit surprised to see a large focus on the history of health-care harm over discussion on poignant solutions. Modern health care as we know it is not without its negative side-affects and paying for subordinate care should not be an option in the new world we want to create for our children. Although the author shares countless stories from his work experience that serve to shed light upon the corruption of health care over the years, the majority of this book unfortunately felt too autobiographical for my liking, whereas I would have liked to see more of the author’s emphasis placed on fresh perspectives for reforming America’s current circumstances out of a profit-making focused system.

Review: In his book, The Purple World: Healing the Harm in American Health Care, Dr. Joseph Q. Jarvis gives readers an insightful look into the many issues caused by the American Healthcare system. Jarvis, with over 30 years of experience in the medical world, both as a physician and as a public health consultant, gives various personal anecdotes from throughout his professional career to help address the flaws in our healthcare system. His personal stories are eye opening as well as entertaining and I thought his experience in the public health sector was especially interesting because it really gives readers a behind the scenes perspective. Most of Jarvis' anecdotes are from the 1980s and I think it's extremely unfortunate that 30 years later many of these problems are still prevalent, demonstrating just how poorly managed the healthcare system is. The majority of Jarvis' book reads more like a memoir however and he spends little time in giving actual solutions that would "heal" the countless issues of our system.

Review: The Purple World is a fantastic read with lots of information from someone who has worked in the field and dealt with policy and those that enforce it first-hand. I found it very eye-opening, especially the discussion of brothels and the health system in Navada that makes up a large portion of the book. I agree with the statement in the book that Americans don’t have the best healthcare system they have the most profitable one, as you can see it everywhere, even when you have insurance healthcare can get very expensive with many people putting their entire life savings into their health. I’m not sure what the answer is, and I’m not sure this book presents one, but it is a good read.

I recommend it to anyone interested in America's healthcare system, especially those who are interested in learning more about the quality of care they are receiving.
