Title: Good insights into moving abroad...pros and cons ...with a positive spin

Review: The author's down to earth way of talking about her subject is refreshing. She talks honestly about problems and difficulties which can arise, but provides solutions, such as making an in-depth study of where a person wants to go and what to expect. Her tips and examples of different people's experiences might help to clarify questions a person hasn't even asked themselves yet. She continually makes reference to the fact that a positive attitude is very important, if you really want to become one with the community and culture you have chosen. Giving up whenever things don't go the way they would have where a person used to live, is a sure way to make them miserable and unable to function in a new environment. A lot can be learned from this book, so a person can make a more informed decision about whether living abroad is really for them, or if they need more time to decide whether to take that step towards the more adventurous life they yearn for.

Review: This is a great beginner’s guide to international travel. While most of the advice seems like common sense during stressful situations it acts as a good reminder/reference tool. Biggest Common Sense Tips: 1. Learn The Language 2. Plan Ahead For Financial Security 3. Prepare For Worse Case Scenarios BUT remain optimistic and positively minded. Sound advice. Small steps towards planning and preparation will help ensure confidence and success. Also, personal tip: know the black market and underlying crime in areas you plan to travel. This is for personal safety. Not everyone has good intentions even if they seem friendly.

Review: I have lived abroad for a number of years and even I learned new and useful tips from this clear and insightful book. In particular I appreciated the advice on housing options and renting vs. owning a home. The interviews with expats gave many useful perspectives. This is not a book about living abroad in any particular place, but rather how one can live abroad successfully no matter where that might be. I also appreciated the author's recommendations and resources.

Rachels book outlines all of the practicalities in a no nonsense format to take the pressure off moving.

Title: Every chapter has a great punch of reality

Review: I am really impressed with this book and how simple and succinct it is. Every chapter has a great punch of reality, tackling the most practical aspects of living abroad. Not only does it give good advice, but the author also managed to collect real life quotes from expats who have experienced it all before. My favorite part is that you can get the key points to take away at the end of every chapter; you could even copy these out and stick them on the wall as motivational slogans to help you when you are struggling with a certain aspect of moving/living abroad.

From the first thoughts about moving abroad to the settling in to another country, the author has really broken down each part of moving and living abroad clearly and made it super easy to follow. The checklists in the second part of the book are a must-have item! I am an expat myself, and if I had these checklists when I was preparing to move abroad, it would have made it so much easier to get ready! They are also universal, so no matter which country you are thinking about going to, they would really come in handy!

I definitely recommend this book for those of you who want to take the exciting challenge of living abroad for whatever reason!

Review: This book covers all the basic elements of living abroad - from thinking about it, doing research and planning, to making the move - and all the details that involved - settling in and going through all the normal adjustment phases - to finally returning home. It is full of tips and stories, a blueprint with a personality. the writing is informative and engaging. The checklist at the end covering every chapter is an easy guide to make sure that you don't forget anything.

the book is well organized. it includes the idea that being self aware is very important as everyone goes through some kind of identity shift, and that may be stressful, - and keeping one’s hobbies to remain in touch with something familiar. by including the various cultural dimensions (re: Hofstede and Hall) the author highlights some basic differences that affect every day life, and will need to be taken into consideration by the expat while living in another culture - many people would not be aware of that. The stories of other expats throughout the book add dimension and insight into the varieties of experience available.

As a former expatriate myself I found this book to be comprehensive and also fun to read. I recommend it to anyone who is considering and planning to go abroad. i will certainly use it the next time I go abroad.
