Review: I bought this book quite a while ago. I previously put it down because one of my language partners (via Skype and email) said the german sentences were sometimes strange or weird. I picked it up a few months ago again - thinking that perhaps my language partner was biased toward her own southern dialect. I have a few new language partners now, and they all agree - some of the sentences are just plain wrong. Some are great, but the frequency of poor sentences is too great to recommend this book.For example (not the best example, but the last one I encountered):Ich bin um 10 Uhr 30 beim Frauenarzt bestellt (bestellt sein) -- I have an appointment at the gynecologist at 10:30.One friend said this is absolutely bad german. 3 other friends said it's possible if you replace "beim" with "zum", but even then, it has the meaning of being subpoenaed, which is really strange for an appointment with the doctor.Langenscheidt has a "basic german vocabulary" with 4000 words. I took a few pictures of pages from this book and sent to german friends, who all said those sentences looked good. Langenscheidt also shows the plural forms for nouns

Review: A good collection of words, sensibly organized, but there are two major downfalls: First, plurals are not included. In German, a language where plurals are highly irregular and must often be memorized on a case-by-case basis, that's a serious and glaring omission. Second, verbs are not conjugated, and German is a language with many irregular verbs. These are big problems for a book about "mastering" German vocabulary.

Review: I've started studying German six months ago, starting from scratch--I'm taking Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, Berlitz and I went to an immersion class in Germany for a few weeks, I've been watching movies in German... etc and now this book--I read the words into my computer with their meanings and then play it back and my mind retains the info. It's great the way the words are arranged into themes, it makes it easier for me to recall when my mind can group them like that (e.g. school supplies: ruler, books, pencils, etc.)Last night, I was watching a movie in German and this time, without subtitles in German, and I could understand what they were saying. It's pretty exciting and I know this book (I'm about half way reading and recording it to my computer) is helping me learn/understand/remember many of the words normally used in every day conversations.It's a helpful book, and for the price, it's excellent!

Review: The biggest flaw, as noted by other reviewers is the omission of the plurals for nouns (sometimes it's in the example sentences, but not enough). Because the rules are complex (when they apply at all) it is always best, when learning a noun, to memorize the grammatical gender, plural, and any irregular case endings. They also need to give the conjugations (at least the third person present, past and participle forms) of strong verbs. A substantial number of German verbs are strong (irregular) verbs and here, too, one needs to memorize the conjugation when learning the word. Also in the conversational past tense, verbs take either haben or sein and it would be helpful if that were indicated.I have found the book to be useful, but if they added what I and others here have suggested, it could sweep the field.

Review: I bought this as I am currently trying to learn German and needed a book that was exclusively vocabulary. This book is divided into categories such as health, eating, shopping, education, government etc, and has a ton of information in it. I like it because while it gives the basic vocabulary for each category, it has much more than a basic textbook. Its much easier to have all the words grouped together in categories rather than having to look them up in a dictionary. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to expand their German vocabulary.

Review: I use this book to supplement my German classes that I teach. The textbook that we use doesn't always have all of the vocabulary that I think students should learn about a certain topic. If I want to make sure I have all of the words I need for a particular topic, I simply look it up in this book and use that list. It is very thorough, but isn't too complicated. It isn't a complete vocabulary of the German language, but it is a great start.

Review: I have had good experience with Barron's Mastering Language Vocabulary series. Having already bought Mastering Spanish Vocabulary, I decided to put my faith in Mastering German Vocabulary. I am glad I did. The book is mainly for those who wish to increase their vocabulary, and so it is concise and easy to carry.There are also a large number example sentences. One for each term, actually. Many people will buy this book just to learn the words, as a reference. However, by studying the example sentences and trying to read them, I was able to pick up a fair amount of German Grammar along the way. Thus, the book not only excells as a quick reference, but is also quite enjoyable to read cover to cover.Thanks very much, Barron, for this wonderful series.

Review: This series is a must-have for anyone studying German. What is especially nice about this book is vocabulary is grouped together by theme. So if you are doing housework, for example, it is a good way to apply the vocabulary as you work instead of just straight studying.I lost the book a few months ago, and I missed it so much that I had to replace it. Great study-aide to take with you when you have to go somewhere that requires waiting around because you can studying in short bursts, set it down, then pick it back up again.
