Review: Extremely interesting stories of the people and culture of Gapun - a tiny, isolated village in the swamps of Papua New Guinea - well-told by a very brave scientist who lived among them for several extended periods in order to document a dying language for posterity.I enjoyed it a great deal, until a few false notes were hit in the last few chapters. While illustrating a particularly compelling example of "cargo belief" common among the villagers, he claims that "...at their core is a rock-hard realization that white people have too much stuff." Two paragraphs later, "I think it is a guileless call to acknowledge the privilege that white skin has acquired, and a gentle request that white people recognize the vast inequalities that we have begotten around the world."Perhaps unsurprisingly, Karl Marx is quoted a few pages later. I kept hoping to see a quote from Mises or Hayek (or perhaps Adam Smith or Bastiat) before The End, but (shockingly) they didn't warrant mention.The wealth of "white people" has nothing to do with skin pigmentation, nor does it necessarily come at the expense of anyone else. It's understandable that the Gapuners believed otherwise, since every white person they ever came in contact with was wildly rich by comparison to themselves and neighboring tribesmen, but why didn't the author at least attempt to explain how the free-market concepts of division of labor / specialization / comparative advantage, mutually beneficial trade, and entrepreneurial innovation were the mechanisms by which even unskilled laborers in western societies could create sufficient value to live in relative luxury? As a social scientist, surely he's well-versed in these ideas. Did he even mention how many dark-skinned people have become millionaires and billionaires in America? He didn't say so, if he did. He probably didn't want to influence their beliefs, but I'm left wondering how they might have processed that information, given their ideas on the mutability of skin color.Kulick also believes we privileged have a duty to engage with the isolated tribal societies in the world, even while acknowledging all the harm those interactions have caused. He argues that since that cat is already out of the bag, we should attempt mitigation as best we can. I'm sympathetic to that argument, but the devil is in the details. I think they would probably be better off in the long run if we butted out. They're probably just as happy -- perhaps happier -- than we are. They believe all their problems would melt away if they were rich, but we know better. There's no end to human desire, nor the scapegoating we engage in when others seem to have more.I bought this book on the recommendation of linguistics professor John McWhorter, who raved about it on his superb "Lexicon Valley" podcast. I'm glad I did. It was well-worth reading, in spite of my criticisms.

Review: This is a beautifully written account of the author's time in a remote village in Papua New Guinea. It's about the death of a language, the evolution of a culture, and a reflection on the influence of white colonialism on thia particular corner of the world. The book is in turn academic, funny, moving, philosophicàl, but always filled with the real lives of a small village of real people. Highly recommended.

Review: A really enjoyable look at a dying language in a place most of us will probably never have the chance to visit. One has to marvel at the tenacity of the author - devoting so much of his time over three decades to live with the people of Papua New Guinea and document a language spoken by so few. This is the linguistic equivalent of a mounted fossil or unique ancient artifact. The stories of life in the village and the "sameness" and "save" of the people of Gapun are entertaining and page turning. Highly recommended.

Review: This is an wonderful and insightful book. It reminds me of my interest in studying anthropology as an undergraduate. It is often hilarious. The conflict of touching the lives of people so remote and “complete” unto themselves is forefront in my mind especially since it is questionable whether any lives exist having been untouched by “modernity”.

Review: Having spent over two years in country in the late 90s, this book is bringing back lots of fond memories and New Guinean truths. I love that the author chose to use both Tayap and Tok Pisin throughout the book. This book is easy to read and gives you a glimpse of village life. I highly recommend it.

Review: Part academic, part great story telling. For me, the uneducated, the details around the intricacies of linguistics were a bit intense. But the author's goal to integrate into the culture of these fascinating people, to really understand them and then share why losing their language was so important was handily met-great read.

Review: The writer was engaging and often humorous but never condescending toward the villagers he spent more than a year living with. In spite of the large differences between western cultures and the villagers' culture, one can't help but see our similarities as fellow humans. I loved the book and was saddened by the damage Westerners have inflicted on these people.
