The result of 15 years of research and exclusive information, this is the first book of investigative journalism to tell the complete story of Littleton, Colorado’s 1999 mass shooting, its far-reaching consequences, and common characteristics among public shooters across the country. A classic in the tradition of In Cold Blood and The Executioner's Song, it comprehensively explores fundamental American themes of violence, racism, parenting, and policing. This updated and revised edition concludes with new material about public shootings since Columbine and how communities can stop such horrific events from happening in the future.<

Review: I’ve read a few other Columbine books, including Dave Cullen’s. I would say it’s similar in style to Cullen’s (Cullen and Kass are both journalists, after all), only Kass goes into much more depth about the Klebold and Harris families, as well as puts Eric’s and Dylan’s diary entries and official documents (especially from their time in the juvenile diversion program) into much more context.I would recommend also reading Cullen’s book, Columbine (if you haven’t already). Together, they paint a very clear picture of this horrific event—the background and its aftermath.

Review: Jeff Kass’ book Columbine: A True Crime Story is now in its second edition, issued in 2014. The first edition came out in 2009, like Dave Cullen’s Columbine. It is published by Conundrum Press. Like Dave Cullen, Jeff Kass is a journalist who participated in the initial coverage of the tragedy. At the time, Kass was a reporter for The Rocky Mountain News, which was a major force in the initial reporting. If there is a book which could challenge Dave Cullen’s for the title of “best all round account” it is probably Jeff Kass’ book. Kass has also work for the Los Angeles Times and contributed to U.S. News and World Report and has taught history and journalism at the University of Denver and the Metropolitan State University of Denver. Kass identifies with Hunter S. Thompson, and in line with that he kicks things off with a description of Colorado, its geography and history. He narrows a broad picture down to the area which would ultimately become the south Denver metro area. We learn, for example, that Littleton is an incorporated municipality where Eric Harris lived, but that “Columbine” itself is a largely residential, unincorporated area of Jefferson county with no public or private institutions to give it any sense of identity, except for the high school. Obviously it is a well to do area, but it also actually is one of the most white areas on the whole planet. There is an undercurrent of violence and cowboy justice underlying some of Colorado’s history, and Kass seems to vaguely draw some connection between that and the shooting. Plenty of the major actors also spoke with Kass, although things didn’t always go so smoothly. I would say that even if they’re both journalists, Kass was more of a “reporter” than Dave Cullen and asked more biting questions, and generally that’s good. Someone had to do it. Sheriff Stone, among others, despise Jeff Kass with a passion. Sue Klebold hung up on him. Kass was way more successful at getting information about the Harrises and the Klebolds. Was that invasive? Yes. Are we interested to hear it? Yes. Jeff Kass was also able to follow the Shoels family around for awhile and they were very forthcoming to him. In Dave Cullen’s book, Eric Harris is almost the main character, Cullen really tries to place us into what he thinks Eric’s perspective was. Kass doesn’t characterize. His facts are copious and largely accurate. I read this right after I finished Cullen’s book and Kass’ more detached style is often easier to read. Also like Cullen, Kass added new material to the second edition, and once again, the book is not very well served by it. He details a plot by three junior high school kids hatched to perpetrate a shooting at their school which was ultimately thwarted because the would-be killers told some girls about it. This was a much better shot at adding something new and worth reading than the jumbled mess at the end of Cullen’s book, but it still falls short. Some of the conclusions he reaches, in analyzing how this plot was foiled are weak. Also his statement about teaching boys to act more like females is ridiculous. On the whole though, this is a highly detailed account of the tragedy of Columbine. Kass touches upon just about all the relevant issues and does succeed in offering a worthwhile, alternative take on the tragedy.

Review: ...the rest descended into a bunch of boring gobbledygook of the chaotic aftermath -- who said what to whom, who disagreed and when, who the reporters could grab pictures of, who they could talk into betraying confidences, who released what reports to where, what law enforcement agencies stuck their foot into the fray, what lawyers filed what against what and on and on down to meaningless details such as what people wore to court. I slogged through that part hoping against hope to glean a few bits of pertinent information to the prevention of this kind of tragedy, but none came.

Review: As I'm reading this book, I keep having to remind myself that this stuff is real and actually happened. Sometimes I feel like I'm in another universe as I'm reading fighting myself in the reality of how people can do stuff like this. Sooooooooooo different from my school days. This book was written well with the exception of some stuff being put in that I was not the least bit interested in. I actually have to hold my tongue in some things I really want to say about some of the speculating/politicizing that went on in some of the content in this book but it would accomplish nothing and most likely get my review tossed. Mostly I liked the book. It was presented well, and for the most part stuck to what happened. There is always going to be some speculation when trying to accurately represent the facts of an event but I thought the writer did a good job. I can say this. I'm done with Columbine, this event torched my soul and ached my heart, I never want to read another book about it as long as I live.

Review: I really enjoyed the way Kass eloquently guides the reader through this horrific tragedy. I loved learning more about the Shoels Family. Great research presented in a respectful and honorary way. So many interesting facts that I had never read elsewhere.I was quite sad when this book ended. I could have read another ten chapters. This case is so deep, please keep digging Mr. Kass!!

Review: Overall an objective and factual account of the events. As for the writing itself, I hope it was the publisher/proof-reading and not Mr. Kass' abilities. Grammatical errors throughout made for some hard reading at times.
