Review: Back Blast is Mark Greaney's 5th installment in the hugely successful Gray Man series. Court Gentry has finally made it home to the USA, intending to get to the bottom of his original termination order. Greaney's been hinting at this backstory since book 1, and finally delivers the goods. Denny Carmichael, Gentry's nemesis comes at him full throttle, including using foreign agents on US soil. While old standbys such as Zack and Hanley play major roles, there are new players such as a new operator and a young, ambitious CIA "suit." Gentry does DC, gray man style and the action is non-stop and intense.The Gray Man tradecraft is nearly over the top, from knocking off an Aryan drug house to intervening in a convenience store robbery. At the same time, there are various perspectives trying to piece together the story beyond Gentry, including other CIA staff and newspaper reporters. All this is set against a backdrop of realistic news reporting (mostly CNN) that is mostly spin, but eerily familiar with today's headlines. There is even a short interlude of father - son bonding gray man style. Gradually, the story behind Back Blast (an old Gentry mission) unfolds, but not before several unique and unexpected twists and turns. The final denouement is both thrilling and climatic, worthy of a multiple installment spanning story-arc.With successful resolution of the gray man status that drove the previous series of escapades, Court is ready to start a new chapter in his life. While he is reunited with his former boss, he has a new handler and seems primed for new adventures.

Review: There is viscous action and gripping suspense on every page.Five years ago Court Gentry (Gray Man) was betrayed in a CIA operation and set up for assassination by his own organization.Court's nemesis is Denny Carmichael, who has become the CIA Director of the National Clandestine Service (formerly called Operations), the directorate that deploys action teams from its Special Activities Division (SAD). Carmichael is now the most powerful person in the Agency, and he goes all out to cover up his past duplicity by killing Court.Desperate and unable to tap his own SAD people without giving away his secrets, Carmichael illegally engages foreign agents along with unknowing JSOC personnel to take out Gentry. This full-court press requires Court to bring all his skills to bear in trying to survive and put things right.As always, Greaney's writing is flawless. His works have all had several intriguing, intertwined subplots and numerous characters; but this one has subtle reminders along the way to make it very easy to follow. And there's a searchable description of the main players.Finally, this novel is not just a sequel but a fully stand-alone book.

Review: This is a singleton-spy versus scores of agents from “action-oriented” Washington acronym-agencies, plus covert stateside military assets.This is my first Gray Man novel which I enjoyed overall, and I will be looking at other books in this series. The writing is very good although overly descriptive in places; the plot-driven storyline is satisfyingly complex; the primary and secondary characters well-drawn.That said, at times the action—especially toward the end—swerved into realms of the fantastic, and the protagonist became a superhero. I’m thinking a combination of Bond, Bourne and maybe John Wick. The author is following in the footsteps of Ludlum, Trevanian, Lustbader & Clancy, so I’m guessing that superhuman protagonists are de rigueur for this genre.I was of two minds about rating this book. It wasn’t a 3 Stars book but really 3.5. Since I enjoyed reading most (>3/4) of this book, it’s 4 Stars.

Review: Not a bad story, but the writing is wordy and tiresome. Why write (as a random example) a four-line paragraph about how a modern auto unlocks itself when the owner has the wireless fob in her posession, when 'she unlocked the car and got in' works just fine? The murder of an important secondary character doesn't receive this much detail. At one point, a station is described as being 'enveloped' by cameras. That didn't convey to me what I think the author intended. Overtelling of meaningless details, grammatical irregularities, and failure to (as Mark Twain cautioned) pick the word you want instead of its second cousin, makes reading this more of a chore than it has to be, and is some of why a 350 page story is bloated to 500 pages.
