Title: It just got real... again!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2012
Review: With no signs of slowing down, Berserk continues its truly epic story with a battle between the resurrected Band of the Hawk and monsters created by the ascended Kushan emperor Ganishka. The fight is visceral, par for the course with Berserk, and as all fans have come to expect the artwork is utterly fantastic. Kentaro Miura's ability to create unique and completely original monsters I would say is unrivaled in all of the manga, comics or any other visual medium I've encountered. It all comes to a head when Griffith makes his way through the clouds to the top of the emperor and quite literally rips the entire world a new one. 34 volumes in Berserk has reached an entirely new level of ridiculousness, a feat I'm sure many doubt would even be possible.

Of course for anyone who's made it to volume 33 they're more than likely not going to get 34 just because someone recommends it, but I'll say it anyway. BUY THIS BOOK! It's difficult to find a story that can stretch across this much time that still has its original aim and hasn't wavered, which Berserk has done and more. Not only has it kept a constant story with unforgettable characters, epic levels of violence and cruelty, a keen sense of morbid/dark humor as well as some truly heart-rending emotion, but it has provided some of the most accurate and biting social and political commentary I've ever encountered.

I have one incredibly minor complaint which shouldn't have any bearing on someone's desire to buy this book, and that is Guts and his crew are only in it for two two-page spreads (actually, it's only Guts who appears twice). However I'm well aware that the Millennium Falcon Arc needed to come to an end and having chapters back on Roderick's ship would have severely broken up the flow of this final battle.

All-in-all volume 34 has laid the groundwork for Griffith to do something incredible that has already begun to change the entire face of the planet (which we actually see for the first time in this volume). The lines of reality and fantasy have been blurred and it's pretty obvious that the Black Swordsman is going to have a lot of work in front of him whenever he and his rag-tag band return from Skellig Island

Title: Different than other volumes in this series; very little dialogue.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2018
Review: This is the 34th volume in the Berserk series. This volume was mainly a gigantic battle between Griffith’s Band of the Hawk and the evil demonic godlike being Ganushka has become. It is revealed that part of Griffith’s force are monsters and initially the human members are upset, but they get over it pretty quickly.

Things get really weird towards the end of this volume. Griffith journeys to Ganushka’s center and the Skeleton King shows up behind Griffith and attempts to kill Griffith. Instead of hitting Griffith the Skeleton King slices the center of Ganushka open with his sword. Ultimate light spills out from this wound in Ganushka and Griffith jumps into the wound/ultimate light.

Suddenly mythological creatures are released into the world, supposedly bringing the world of Fantasia to the current world. It was all very bizarre and there was very little dialogue throughout the whole volume; very different from previous Berserk volumes. I am honestly not sure what I think about all of this and where this story is going.

As with previous volumes illustration is well done.

Overall this was a different and intriguing volume in the Berserk series. There is actually very little dialogue throughout, with the majority of scenes being battle scenes. I never thought I would see unicorns in Berserk, but low and behold...here they are. I would recommend this whole manga series to those who enjoy fantasy horror manga.

Title: A titanic battle erupts!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2018
Review: The Band of the Hawk faces off against the transformed Emperor Ganishika. Towering so high he breaches the clouds. His mind is fractured by his change. He sees his army as insects, not caring if he crushes them. How can Griffith and his army brave this monster.

His war demons will have to unveil their true forms to their human allies. Will the Band of the Hawk fracture under the strain, or will the rally and fight with their demonic brethren against the vile spawn of Emperor Ganishika?

This volume is wall to wall action, showing us just how much the stream of causality controls even one who seems outside of it. The Godhand's plan is entering into its next phase. All events in the world have lead to this battle.

The Hawk of Light challenges the God of Destruction. It's the stuff of legends. And it is all a lie.

BERSERK continues to be amazing. Miura's storytelling is powerful. This fantasy epic graphic novel shows while it's one of the best out there. If you're a fan of fantasy, you need to read this series!

Title: One minor annoyance...
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2011
Review: The story remains as captivating and epic as always. Amazing how Miura can create such a long story and never lose focus. He knows exactly what he wants and it makes me think he had the entire thing very specifically mapped out before even starting.

Anyway, that being said... I have one minor complaint: Puck.
Don't get me wrong; I loved Puck through volumes 1-around 26 or so, when he was joined by Isidro and Evarella.
Here in lies the problem; Puck isn't a character anymore, his character has been degraded into costume one-liners all the time. I've counted. In the last 6 volumes, he's done that almost every panel he's been in. And now that we have Isidro AND Evarella alongside him, it creates comedy relief overload.
Puck is almost never drawn photo-realistically anymore (it's always his parody form) so half the time, I've basically forgotten what he even looks like.

I hope he can go back to being a contributing character once the gang reaches their destination, his homeland, but in the meantime, I personally find it to be quite grating after the 30th time. It gets old rather quick... such a shame too to see him degrade like that.
