Title: Provoked Great Discussion for Library Non-fiction Book Group
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2015
Review: Our library non-fiction book group read and discussed this book over two months. It produced a great discussion on so many topics: Roosevelt & Taft, their wives, McClure's magazine, trust-busting, elections, political parties, Ida Tarbell, reformists etc. Some comments from the group:

* although it wasn't an easy read, it was a worthwhile read and we were all glad to have read it

* most liked Taft more than Roosevelt - we were dismayed by Roosevelt's actions over Taft's presidency

* both had strong wives

* loved the role of the press

* author is great at conveying scenes - you feel you are there

* we were blessed as a nation to have both men serve in office

* Teddy was more visionary, Taft better at executing perhaps

* Taft should be more well-known and respected - why isn't he? Because he just served one term? Wasn't as dynamic as Teddy? No wars or memorable events occurred during his Presidency?

* Loved descriptions of Teddy by others - very colorful

* Juxtaposition of two men with narrative on press created an original and interesting structure for the book

* We are dealing with many of the same issues today

There were lots more comments as we discussed the book for four hours, but this gives you the gist of it. We had also read Goodwin's book on Lincoln and her childhood in Brooklyn. Enjoyed both of those, too.

Title: What a great read!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2020
Review: What a great book that deals with the themes of friendship, disagreement, and forgiveness. This book primarily traces two lives - as well as an unlikely friendship that was formed between Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Together, their presidencies began the Progressive Era in America but division in the party as well as competition over the fate of the 1912 election caused them not to speak until a reconciliation happened in 1918, 7 months before Roosevelt died. This is the best part of the book!

The book also covers the Muckrakers and how their style of journalism led by McClureโ€™s Magazine and that of John Phillips, Ida Tarbell, Albert Boyden, Ray Stannard Baker, John Siddal and the mercurial editor S. S. McClure. After a 1906 split from McClure they pooled their talents and resources to buy The American Magazine, which they recast as a writersโ€™ collective. Of course there would be reconciliation later too.

The themes, the era, and the style of writing make for an incredible tale of the Progressive Era...1900-1920. Excellent read!

Title: Politics for 1900 or 2016
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2016
Review: Doris Kearns Goodwin has two purposes in The Bully Pulpit really tells two interconnected stories rather than one large narrative. The predominant portion of the story profiles William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt and the unique friendship and sometimes adversarial relationship later on. Roosevelt-the life of the party people person, while Taft had more of an academic/legalistic mind. They each believed in breaking corrupt cultures in their home states and eventually nationally. They were the odd couple of corruption.

They would eventually become fired by progressive ideas, but they needed the spark. That spark came in the form of a group of young muckraking journalists who dared to outline the activities of the corporate goliaths and spur politicians who were deeply indebted to the wealthy men of America to change. Over time, there would be a move to reverse as the progressive mood abated. This is also the story of that magazine and the personalities that tore it apart.

One sees a lot in the politics of the 1900s in for example todayโ€™s progressive movement, but more important than that, itโ€™s a hell of a story.

Title: I wish I could meet Doris Kearns Goodwin....
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2014
Review: First, I'm a Goodwin fan, so this review might be slightly prejudiced. This book is really long, but it offers a fascinating look into an historical time we often push to one side. Trust-busting, yellow journalism, Span/Am War, all had their well-intentioned roots in the legacy of Teddy Roosevelt. Even William Howard Taft would not be WHT without the love/hate/love relationship he had with TR. It made me add both of these men (plus Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffans, et. al.) to my list of "people I would love to meet." The length of the book was never a problem with me because Goodwin always kept the pace fast. Just as I got to a part where I wanted to know "what happens next....", she would shift gears into another part of the story, then would keep me reading rapidly to find out "what happens next" in that segment. She would then deftly tie different segments together as she wove this masterful story of two very dynamic men and their equally dynamic families. Total opposites, yet powerful in their own unique way.

Title: Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft: Tradition, Ego, and the Social Imperative
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2014
Review: Doris Kearns Goodwin is one of our ablest living historians, who has written a number of volumes on important Americans such as Lincoln and on Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, This history on Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft is another excellent addition to Goodwin's body of historical work. Here we see two gigantic figures (pardon the pun) clash at the turn of the last century (1900 and after) as first Teddy Roosevelt and then Taft try to lead America, the Federal Government, and American business into the 20th century, while ideology, ambition, politics, Republican (Taft) versus Bull Moose (T. Roosevelt, the would-be renegade) collide over the soul of the Republican party and the desire for a more socially responsible business environment. A great read about a fascinating era, that reverberates with us today in the wake of the problems that led to the Great Recession of the early 2000s and our search for what to do about correcting those economic abuses and government failures....
