Jada Baker might be a millennial, but she was born to worryβ€”about her mom, about her job, about abused animals, and about the growing hatred she sees playing out in the news every day. But she also believes that the system will work, that goodness will win out over evil, and that she can find a love as rich and deep as the love her parents have for one another. And when Amie Luca, a veterinarian whose compassion and dedication to helping mistreated animals captures her heart, Jada finally begins to trust that she has found what she’s been searching for all along.

Review: This book brought forward memories of the difficult early '70s and through the story of two couples, Dusty and Ali and Rory and David, led the reader forward to the post-2016 election days of dread. Dusty and Rory are still a part of the story as we look at the challenges facing a younger couple, Amie and Jada. Without preaching, the reader is reminded that the fight for equal rights and dignity is a forever fight and one we can never give up on.

Review: Weaves the women's and gay rights struggles of the 60s-70s with today's resistance. I found myself feeling the hurt, the anger, the hope and pride expressed by the characters. The love for animals and the desire to protect and rescue them brings the characters together and mirrors their determination to live honest and honorable lives.

Title: We’re here because we’re needed.’
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019
Review: Michigan author Marianne K. Martin earned her degree from Eastern Michigan University and her career has included teaching in the public schools in Michigan, journalism, professional photographer, coaching high school/college/amateur softball teams, founding Michigan Women’s Major Fastpitch Association, publishing and co-owner of Bywater Books! Add to these credentials her recognition and accolades for her lesbian fiction. She lives in Ann Arbor.

From Marianne’s own words we gain insight into her mission: β€˜If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that while many things have improved for the LGBT+ community, the fight isn’t over. And for those of us who were on the front lines all those years, we have a responsibility to continue to fight and to share our wisdom and lessons-learned with the wonderful generations that follow.’ And inspiring as her depth of experience and her philosophy are, the core of her gifts is evident in this particularly fine new novel – her eleventh to date!

KICKIN’ ROCKS is at once a fine love story and a salute to the importance of animals and their impact on people. She opens her story with a telling scene: β€˜There was a lot Jada Baker didn’t like about her neighbor, Buck Hodgins, and at the top of the list was how he treated his dog. Every day when she looked out her kitchen window, every day when she came home form work, everyday she saw how he treated her – the heavy chain, the lack of shelter, the empty water bowl, dry dog food dumped over in the dirt…’ This opens the door for the well-sculpted novel that follows, a story that draws similarities between the abuse animals endure with the trials gay people face daily.

Marianne’s summary of the plot is excellent: β€˜Jada Baker might be a millennial, but she was born to worryβ€”about her mom, about her job, about abused animals, and about the growing hatred she sees playing out in the news every day. When the system suddenly fails them and their happiness is threatened by ugly hate and bitter homophobia, the young couple turns to help from a woman who has learned the hard way that kicking rocks is painful and that it takes unwavering persistence to move them. Dusty Logan fought for the ERA, she’s suffered with friends through the AIDS crisis, and she’s battled for the right to openly love a womanβ€”but a lifetime of fighting has left her exhausted and disengaged. Yet when she sees a new generation of women facing old, familiar challenges, her spirit to fight the good fight once more is rekindledβ€”and Jada and Amie might have a shot at real happiness after all.’

This is one terrific romance with many layers of significance – a novel that will find a very wide audience, and certainly more awards for this fine author. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 19

Review: Jada is a delivery van driver with a worry complex. She hates what’s going on in the world but tries so hard to keep going on hoping things will get better. For some lucky animals, she is that change! Amie is a veterinarian who loves her work with animals and will do whatever she can for them. When Jada meets the beguiling woman, something clicks and she NEEDS to know more about this woman. When homophobia and hate fall in their laps they are so lost and hurt, wondering how something like that could still happen. Enter Dusty, a woman who fought for the ERA and understands how Jada and Amie feel and is willing to help them regain their power.

This book was so thought provoking, so full of emotions, sadness, rage, anger, tears, joy, strength, love, love, love and hope. It is so sad to see how long it’s taken women to get the respect and equality we deserve, the LGBT community even longer and how quickly the country is backsliding… But this book offers hope and a way to take your power back. The romance between Amie and Jada is lovely and sweet. It’s mushy and made me say awww a few times. I loved the work with the animals, who doesn’t love a good rescue story? But the best part for me was the relationship between Dusty, Amie and Jada. These three women need each other for support and the closeness that comes from a treasured friendship and respect. This is one of these books that will stay with you for a long time and make you want more.

Review: ...story tellers. Marianne K. Martin is a story teller.

This is a story of people who were there because they were needed, from the dawn of the ERA to the present day, women were at the helm. They were used to doing the work, so they continued to do the work, but for themselves and other women. Whether it was organizing committees, protests or veterinarian's offices, the women were there because they were needed. And we showed up. And they show up in this story with their scars, their stories and their callused hands and open hearts.

Dusty was there at the beginning with Ali, at the LGBTQ protests, at the ERA protests. Jada and Amie were there, rescuing animals and tending to their wounds and hurting hearts. Together with their friends, they helped each other and sometimes they helped total strangers who became friends. Through the years, there was loss and love and always, always an open heart.

This was such an encompassing story of history and her stories. This story will stick with me for a long time to come.
