Review: First off, very poor formatting. The publisher uses huge gaps to separate paragraphs, rather than traditional indentation with no gaps. Also, when the viewpoint character or location changes within the same chapter, sometimes there's nothing to mark the transition, just a big gap that's identical to all the other big gaps between paragraphs. Other times there is a line of stars to mark the transition, with no obvious rhyme or reason why one transition has the stars and another doesn't. This is the most poorly formatted ebook I've ever read, and it is published by a major publisher. Go figure.

Second, I was charged sales tax in addition to the purchase price. The tax was charged by the publisher, NOT by Amazon. So be warned: the listed price is NOT the price you will actually be paying. All total, the book costs about 60 cents more than the listed price. I've never been charged sales tax on an ebook, so this one was new to me, and it really irritated me. I'm already annoyed that these big publishers charge the same price for an ebook as for a paperback, and then to get hit with sales tax as well...Bollocks!

If I hadn't wanted to read this book so badly, the formatting and the sales tax nonsense would have irritated me enough that I would have returned the book immediately. But I was a big fan of The 4400, which was cancelled after a season 4 cliffhanger. I only recently found out about The 4400 books, so I had to read this book despite the formatting and tax issue.

Welcome to Promise City and its sequel are not mere self-contained books that would fit somewhere in between episodes of the series. Welcome to Promise City and its sequel should be subtitled The 4400: Season 5, because that's exactly what they are. The first book picks up right after the final cliffhanger episode of the final season of The 4400 television series. If you've always wondered whether Tom Baldwin took the shot, and how the saga of the 4400 continued after the series, you'll find your answers here.

There are two main story threads. One revolves around Danny Farrel's body, and the other revolves around Richard Tyler and the Marked. If this were the actual television series, this book would probably take place over the course of three or four episodes.

Overall, it's a very good, well-written book. Kudos to the author, but boo to the publisher for the poor formatting and tax issues. If you're a fan of The 4400, this book is a must-have. But the saga of The 4400 doesn't end with this book, so now I'm moving on to the sequel, Promises Broken.

Review: Greg Cox became the creative mind behind a beloved television series when he wrote "Welcome to Promise City", a position that (for the fans) cannot be taken lightly. This book is entertaining. Cox reveals his ability to keep the voices of the characters while moving along the story akin to what we saw before. However, I did not feel that the characters, especially those that were newer to the series, were developed as deeply. I simply did not care about these characters as much. The story did not move me emotionally. I was left feeling that this was another way for CBS to get a few more dollars rather than provide entertainment for a faithful fan-base. I don't know that Cox took full advantage of the platform that he was given. With a t.v. series, you can only go so deep into a character's mind or emotional base. With a book, you can dive deep into their emotional processes, histories, details, etc., that have to be overlooked in a 45 minute show. This book wasted that opportunity. I plan to read the follow-up book, "Promises Broken", however, now I will go into it with slightly-different expectations.

Review: This is a direct contiuation of the final episode of The 4400 television show. The novel is set in badly damaged Seattle in the months after a strange plague kills several thousand Seattle residents. It's a pretty wild ride continuing the lives of the major characters we got to know from the series.

My only complaint is how Cox, the author had to stick with the geographical errors from the show. The last season of the show and the novel place "Promise City" on the Duwamish River Delta - a polluted waterway. Picky, picky, I know that's what you're thinking. There is no Duwamish River Delta in Seattle! The Duwamish has been a very polluted river and is still being cleaned up after over ten years of work. The writers of the show got that more or less correct, and Greg Cox, a native of Western Washington had to stick with the error.

But, if you're in Peoria or elsewhere the geographical errors in the the 4400 novels will slip right past you.

The 4400 novels are a wonderful way to reconnect with your favorite characters from the show for a rainy, yucky weekend read.
