Throughout the years, there may have been equally charismatic performers, comparable athletes, and even better interviews, but none were blessed with the same combination of talents to manage to stay on top for over three decades.

To wrestling fans, the Nature Boy is a platinum-blond deity, a sixteen-time world champion who accurately boasted that he could have a five-star match with a broom. No matter how limited the opponent, Flair had the skill and determination to bounce all over the mat, transforming his rival into a star. When the camera light went on, "Slick Ric" could convince viewers that, if they missed an upcoming match, a m

Title: To be the man, you gotta beat the man"

Review: If you watched wrestling in the 1980s on TBS, you know the name of the 16-time world champion Ric Flair. He styled. He profiled. Bedazzled in robes and Rolex. He talked the talk. He walked that aisle. He was the man. Whoo! He was the champ. His ring persona was conceit and class. He could out-talk a snake oil salesman. His in-ring ability was electric and extensive. You knew a Ric Flair match was going to last about an hour. You knew no matter the opponent that you would be entertained. Much like Roddy Piper, Ric Flair made adoring fans cheer for the "bad guy". This book is like talking to your childhood sports hero about what went on behind the scenes. I enjoyed this book so much, I bought it as a gift for my friends who shared my passion for '80s wrestling.

Review: I bought this book with the intention of reading it on an airplane in about a month's time. I ended up finishing it in about 5 days instead because it was so good. Yes, Ric Flair's book is one that should be read by anyone who has even a passing interest in wrestling. His story is brutally honest, humorous, and insightful in many ways. It's a good look into the inner workings of various wrestling groups, like the AWA's interesting business practices, the short sightedness of the NWA, the messes WCW got into, and parts of his WWF/E reigns. He calls out certain wrestlers and praises others, but you can read the book if you want to figure out who they are. Most of them are who you would expect with a few exceptions.

I do have a few complaints but they are not things that can be tied to the book itself. For one, unfortunately this book is rather dated, as it came out in 2004, so a LOT of stuff has been left out. I would love to read about Flair's entire WWE run, and especially his final match with Shawn Michaels, and his more recent and public personal and financial issues, but sadly that is simply not here. Maybe he will release another book (lord knows he could use the money) but until then we only have up to 2003 with this. The other issue I have is that my copy I got for this for my Kindle 3rd Gen was somewhat quirky. Stuff would be in bold that would then end with no real rhyme or reason, there were various spelling errors, and overall it just seems like a somewhat shoddy conversion from text to Kindle.

Overall though none of these issues detract from what is a solid book. If you're a big wrestling fan and you still haven't read this you owe it to yourself to do so ASAP. Sure, here in 2012 the book is not "complete," but it doesn't mean what's been written isn't worth your time.

Title: Great reading.....just feel there could be more.

Review: It's easy to sit here and write about how great Ric Flair, and just keep on going and going. The fact is, you have to be a Ric Flair fan to even be reading this book (I would think). So rather than repeat what everyone else has said, let me at least say that the only other wrestling book I've read is Bret Hart's "My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling", which was an amazing read. I gave that book (5) stars, and the depth in which Hart reveals his life and profession is beyond incredible. You definitely get more of the personal side of Bret than you do with Ric. This book provides an excellent look at the wrestling business itself, if you are interested in that. It is quite sad to read what Ric went through for being one of the best wrestlers ever, and you would think that he got better treatment than he did. The fact that he stayed in the business and kept going after that he went through is a tribute to the love he has for the sport. As a fan, I always preferred the NWA to any other organization, and I still believe that the NWA was what wrestling was all about. My only complaint is what another reader said. Once Ric gets to the WWE, you start to feel he is a salesman for that company, but he was given a second chance in that company, so it's not surprising that he is praising it lots of the time. Ric is definitely the man, and one of the greatest wrestlers who ever graced the sport.

Title: Could Not beat The MAN!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2006
Review: In Saudi Arabia, wrestling is very popular, and yes, I did get to see a lot of WWE/WWF, NWA/WCW, and AWA etc.

I was a huge Flair fan, in terms of his wrestling, character, or interviews. With that said, here are my problems with Ric:

His Career:

1. Yes, he is considered one of the reasons behind revolution of wrestling. However, his last five years were just horrible.
jobbing like crazy. In addition, when today's and future fans watch his matches they will never believe that Ric was a legend.

He should have retired when WWE took over WCW.

2. Yes Ric won the world title 16 times or whatever times, so that is a record, but that also means he lost 15 or so times.

3. I know the man can wrestle scientifically / dirty / grappling etc. Heck, he did an amazing job in Japan, even during the NWA/WCW days. However, for some insane reason he can really wrestle in a very disappointing way. Moreover, yes he has been repetitive in many occasions. For example, if you watch his three-disc box set released by WWE. There is a match with Sting that goes well until the last 10 minutes. He runs out of moves and repeats the same moves he did in the beginning of the match. In addition, all you see in the WWE are chops, low blows, and the figure four.

4. Don't want to compare between wrestles, because times are different, organizations have different styles, politics play a strong role, etc. Nevertheless, Hogan vs. Flair will always come up.

Hogan proved to be better because:
1. Vince needed to take wrestling to a new era, and Hogan happened to be in the right place, right time situation.
2. Hogan may have wrestled bigger people, and bigger in the minds of many people is better.
3. Hogan carried the American hero persona during a needed hero. America was going thru the political conflicts with Iran, Iraq etc.
4. Better advertisement, more glitter, better lighting, Arenas were more attractive looking, catchy entrance music, and might power of merchandise.
5. Hogan physically had more muscle and did power impact moves that kept the fans in awe. E.g. body slamming Andre, Yokuzuna.
6. More movie roles. IMHO Probably appealed more to kids than adults. Still a win, because a large percentage of fans are kids.

Now please do not get me wrong, Hogan is also guilty and has almost the same negative points that Flair has, such as repetitive moves, and is known to be great politicians, and did not say the whole truth in his book.

The Book
1. Why is he kissing the [...] of the current WWE people, such as Vince, HHH, HBK, etc? Flair you are legend. You do not need to do that!
2. Why badmouthing the wrestlers in your book. I wish he had not written the book. I wanted to continue thinking highly of him. It seems that the book was made to get back at was said about him. Fair enough but say something that is true. Bret Hart is not a repetitive wrestler; he has ended matches in many different ways. In fact, he was a master Face & Heel. Flair is only a master as Heel PERIOD.

Insulting Mick Foley is the mother of all insults. Mick has put a new term in wrestling "HARDCORE". Mick did it for the love of the game. I am not thrilled about seeing Mick go thru all these painful moves, but let's face it Neither Flair nor Hogan never would do 5% of risks that Mick has done.

3. Stating the facts was not the purpose of writing the book. It is clearly to get back at what said about Flair. I understand everyone has the right to defend himself, but please say something that makes sense, and be honest.

Everybody is riding the wave, I am wrestler hmmmm Mick wrote a book, and so can I. Here I go, NO NO NO.
Mick first two books are masterpieces. Truthful, funny, and does not get boring. He certainly did not kiss Vince's [...].

Sorry for writing so much, but Flair will no doubt be one of wrestling's foundations, but the book and his current wrestling reign is really putting a nasty scar.

Thanks,
Nawaf
