Title: Teenage heroes after Pinochet regime

Review: My new favorite book! In two enchanting Chilean seaside towns, with cafes, fig trees, and magic birds, Agosin's band of teenagers become heroes, as they search for their friends who have disappeared during the brutal Pinochet years. Who could forget the scene when they first read out loud the names of students from their school who have disappeared, memorializing them. This book stands on its own, and I find it even more even more unforgettable than I lived on Butterfly Hill. I hope that teachers will add it to the curriculum along with Wiesel's Night, Danticat's Krik?Krak, and Erdrich's Tracks.

Review: I really wanted to like this book, after reading the first one. I am not sure of the author's intent, but if she wanted to write a book about the political upheaval in Chile in the early 70s, even in a fictional book, it doesn't make any sense to completely fabricate the details. The "General," obviously Pinochet, was in power for over seventeen years, not two years, so nothing in this book was accurate. Additionally, while Celeste was supposedly maturing over the few years this book spans, it was really hard to tell. A more self absorbed person would be hard to find, thinking only about herself and what she wanted to know and do, regardless of the pain and needs of others.

Additionally, there were phrases throughout the book that I am quite sure were not said in Chile in the early 70s, like "losing it, onesie, high five, BFF, and many more that felt jarring, and took me out of the story.
