Growing up in a family active in promoting civil rights, Anita L. DeFrantz knew the importance of letting her voice be heard as an African American and as a woman. Her activism for individual rights and her ascent as a leader began in earnest at Connecticut College, where she was sophomore class president, chairman of the student judiciary committee her junior year, author of a student bill of rights, and a house fellow, supervising student dorm residents her senior year. At commencement in 1974, she was elected a trustee of the college by her class. Eventually, she would serve as a Connecticut College trustee for 24 years.

Review: A blockbuster considering this is about a very successsful Olympian from various parts of life. This isn't about an Olympic Gold Medalist - it is about the struggle to get to the top and what it means. DeFrantz is not a silver spoon baby - her achievements come from the heart. She earned every breath she took and you feel it reading her story. I only wish I had known more of this information especially before meeting her! Not everyone wins a race, but they use what they have learned in LIFE to make a difference = Anita sets the example. She gets 6 stars from me or more. What is great is she cares! not because she wins all the time - it's in her blood. She won't stop trying to make a difference. Something we all need to learn.Maybe we need her in Congress or in the Senate! We are lucky to have her! Thanks Anita from all of us - men, women, black, white and other. You make the world a better place to be!

Review: Inspirational. We've gotten the books from Peter Ueberroth, Paul Ziffren and Harry Usher from the 1984 games. We've gotten books from the athletes - Bruce/Kaitlyn Jenner.
This is the one book, as a volunteer with the 1984 Olympic Games, I've been waiting for. She was an Olympian, an executive with LAOOC and a member of the IOC... as a woman.
I've always been an admirer of Anita DeFrantz and her ability to stay cool under some of the most dire of circumstances. A great read for those who are into the Olympic movement!

Review: I went to a launch event for this book and bought it there –the book itself is beautiful, and the stories inside even more so. It was such a pleasure to be able to meet her in person and hear her speak at the Q&A. She has spent her whole life pursuing justice, fairness, and equality for women and athletes. Great event, great read, this book is a MUST BUY for anyone with any interest in the Olympic movement, politics of sports, or the ongoing fight for gender equality.
