Title: An essential book for specialists

Review: As other reviewers have already noted, this book is a very detailed compendium of the Soviet airborne forces from 1930 until the German invasion of the USSR in June, 1941. During this time, the Soviet actually pioneered the development of parachute and air assault forces. Although, always plagued by limited resources, and especially the lack of suitable aircraft, by 1938, the Soviet Union was the most advanced in this field, with several operational small airborne brigades. Vladimir Kotelnikov's book describes very well how this came about, as well as the problems encountered, many due to the comparatively backward state of Soviet industry. The many photos and illustrations in this volume speak for themselves.

This long book is indispensable for specialists in its subject, and may be of interest to readers interested in the development airborne forces in general. As stated on its cover, this book was translated from Russian, and in places, this translation can make for difficult reading. Fortunately, these places are few, and the rest is dry, expository prose. Unfortunately, there are no references or footnotes, and there is only a short bibliography. This is inexplicable as the author has written extensively on Soviet military aviation, but as it is, I could not rate this book with five stars.

Title: Fascinating look at some really weird military hardware

Review: The Red Army was in the forefront of the development of paratroop forces in the early 1930's. Not content at merely delivering soldiers by parachute, the Soviet Union expected to deliver tanks, artillery, and supplies. This book details the amazing variety of equipment that was developed from the mundane (transport aircraft, parachutes) to the bizarre (an air-bus and air-boat delivered without parachutes, flying tanks, etc.). Many of these ideas were far beyond the state of the art in the 1930s, and did not prove to be practical. The author has compiled a remarkably detailed account of all the various schemes. This book will appeal mainly to those interested in the history of airborne forces and unusual military hardware. It may be a bit technical for those interested in general military history as there is very little coverage of actual airborne operations.

Title: Red Assault - The Creation of Soviet Airborne Forces

Review: Vladimir Kotelnikov's "Red Assault" looks in great detail at the interwar period and the numerous developments that took place in the Soviet Union when it came to airborne forces and all the equipment that was needed to facilitate their training, deployment, and to sustain them once in the field. Looking at the personalities behind many of the innovations around the creation of an airborne force in the Soviet Union it becomes clear that many were novices operating on a trial and error method, resulting in large expenses and a lot of time lost due to the fact that many 'specialists' were simply not trusted due to their tainted background under the former Tsarist regime. Nonetheless, the 1920s and in some ways the 1930s were a time of experimentation throughout the Soviet Union and that can readily be seen in how military theorists and technicians looked at the future of airborne forces. Kotelnikov offers a large number of descriptions about everything related to the needs of these men and women, from uniforms and parachutes, to armored vehicles, light tanks, artillery, small arms, machine guns, and the transport aircraft that were in constant development. He also includes discussions about the various exercises that took place in the mid-1930s to showcase the latest developments.

Readers should keep in mind that this is not your usual historical monograph, there is a lot of detail, facts, figures, and technical discussions offered by the author so you should have some knowledge of the Soviet Union and military history in general. Finally, Kotelnikov does offer a discussion of plans to use airborne forces during the various military engagements the Soviets were engaged in from 1939-1940 (Winter War, invasion of Poland, Khalkhin Gol, etc.), but these were limited operations and the Soviets never really had a chance to showcase what their airborne forces were capable of, in part due to the limits of the air transport at their disposal.

Title: A look at a little known WWII force

Review: This is an in depth look at the Soviet airborne forces from their conception through to 1941. This is a book of short chapters covering the troops, aircraft (produced and concepts) and their cargos. This is a force that was to be able to deliver, paratroopers, their supplies, artillery, pillboxes, tanks, and staff cars from the sky. All done in an art deco way.

The only improvement I would of liked to of seen was chapters expanded on.
