Title: HORRIBLE

Review: Wow. Just wow. This book is incredibly negative. I’m 70 pages in, and I cannot tell you how many times he’s told the reader that children with ADHD will fail at life for x,y,z reason. I bought this book as I thought it would help me parent my child with ADHD. It has been absolutely useless thus far. And to be honest inaccurate. I was diagnosed with ADD as a child, and I have a great career, management my household successful, and manage money very well… some of the things this author claims ADHD people cannot do.

Also it bothers me that he acts like all ADHD children are affected by ADHD to the same degree. In my opinion, there are varying degrees of ADHD… maybe he gets to that point later in the book? I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish this book. It’s pretty alarming to continually hear the opinion that your kid is going to fail at life. Review: This was the first ADHD book I've read, recommended by a top local therapist. My initial reaction to the first few pages was I felt they alone were worth the price of the book. The next chapters gave great explanations to help me to really understand what ADHD is and isn't for the first time. It became a major foundational block of my "understanding" and acceptance of people on the Executive Function Developmental Deficit Spectrum. The application section (the point system) wasn't as great for my case due to a comorbid diagnosis, but I assume it could work for many kids. After catching up on other books, I may continue with other books by Barkley. I highlighted so much of this, sometime times whole pages, and will re-read those parts, and maybe the whole book again sometime.

Review: Strengths: Well written and easy to read. Has may examples of where the interventions were employed. Easy to follow. Simple execution. Limits: Conventional wisdom, authoritative approach. Doesn’t take into account a child’s lagging skills, developmental limitations, or potential trauma history. With this approach the will of the parent is imposed on the child without attention to the child’s concerns (ie the root of the noncompliance).

Review: This is a challenging read. The book focuses almost entirely on deficits and pathology. Barkley begins by citing research study after research study explaining why those with adhd will perpetually struggle. Understood that "the facts" can't be sugar coated. However, not all with ADHD are identical. Many actually have strengths and talents! Wow, what a concept! Barkley's other book, raising your defiant child, is much better (also co-written). That information is easier to digest, and as a parent or treating professional, leaves one with a sense of optimism. Other authors better articulate this information with a positive stance. I conclude by reiterating that this is difficult to read in its entirety.

Review: Russell A. Barkley is one of the top authorities on ADHD. Our pediatrician recommended him and I'm extremely glad he was able to point is in the right direction. This book is evidence-based and a reliable source, which is a refreshing change from a lot of books I've found on the subject of ADHD (and parenting children with ADHD) that are often filled with a lot of unsupported anecdotes and pseudoscience. There is a helpful guide in the back for further reading filled with books that have been vetted by the author, as well.

Title: This book is dense.

Review: Don't get me wrong, this is a good book, it resonated with a lot of what we've experienced with our own child, but it is DENSE.

As you can imagine, a parent of a child with ADHD might also have some ADHD issues of their own. It took me three months to muster the willpower to get through the introduction. By that time, I decided to also pick up the audiobook version of this tome. Having both of these formats available to read/review has helped make me better progress. With any luck I'll make it through and be able to apply the advice before another three months has passed.
