Gardening Tips For Fall And Winters

Among all the frequently asked questions about gardening in the fall and winter season, whether winter harms or kills the ornamental plants is the most asked one.

Though the fall season does not harm your plants but ways to take care of your garden differ a lot as compared to summer and spring. If you are too one of those who have tried various methods in the last fall and winter season, but they didn’t work. Don’t worry, this fall and winter you won’t be repeating the same things as I’m here to assist you with the gardening tips your garden needs the most.

Fall and winter seasons prepare your garden for the upcoming season i.e., spring. So, you have to take care of your garden accordingly. Try to add plants that are resistive and adaptive so that they can withstand the changing environmental conditions.

Here are a few tips which you’ll find useful during the fall and winter season plantation.

Cover The Flowering Plants

When blooming is about to rejuvenate your garden, and the winter is ahead. It’s time to cover your plants. Low temperatures damage the buds, and the damage does not show up promptly. It stays hidden until you see brown spots on the petals of the flowers.

A hard freeze can also make the bud fall off the plant. To avoid such damage, cover your plants with an old sheet. Avoid using the plastic sheet as it can harm the plant when the sun shines on it.

Water Your Plants Frequently

When the freeze is imminent, start watering your plants frequently. Take care of the moisture your plants are taking up especially the ones which are potted and annuals. Because freezing prevents water/moisture reach the roots of the plants, leaving them dehydrated. Make sure you are not only watering the roots but also the shoots.

Prepare Shrubs And Trees For Winter

Plants and trees need timely pruning. But it’s not healthy during the fall and the winter season. This is because pruning involves cutting down the tissues leaving the wounds open. They need time to heal before the hard freeze occurs. So, avoid cutting them until the spring starts.

Additionally, if you face heavy snow in the winter season, never leave your plants bare open. Cover them with wooden frames to avoid snow directly affecting the plants and trees.

If you have fruit trees in your garden, prefer covering their trunks with wraps that do not allow pests to enter through.

Bring In Your Houseplants

If you have a collection of houseplants, bring them in. Spray the plants’ leaves with safe insecticidal spray so that they do not die or turn yellow/brown. Houseplants do not need sunlight for more than 5 hours, so keep them where sunlight shines in. Moreover, as plants especially houseplants grow slower in winters, so avoid overwatering them.

Let Your Plants Rest During Fall

Fall is the time when plants rest and are dormant. Do not force them to grow. Let them take a rest as it won’t only help them grow more in the spring season but also fertilize the soil. If you have grown plants in pots or containers, protect them with the covering that makes them resistive towards the freeze period.

Perennials Care During Fall And Winter

Unlike other plants, perennials need water regularly to stay alive and active. But when it comes to pruning, they should also be not pruned during the fall and the winter season. But few classes of perennials need to be cut to avoid the spread of the disease that can harm the whole plant.

Additionally, if you are planning to put in a flower bed in the coming spring, cover the desired area with a wrap or mulch. It will prevent the growth of weeds and harmful shrubs.

If you find your plants’ leaves are turning black, dig them and store them indoors after covering them in a newspaper. Try to keep them at a dark place under 5 to 10 degrees temperature until spring starts.

Plant Evergreens

If you are thinking of planting new seedlings during fall or winter, go for evergreens. You may also choose daffodils or tulips which actually bloom in spring but are planted during fall. Evergreens also remain green during extreme weather conditions like winters. Moreover, their leaves also do not turn yellow, brown, or black and give fragrant flowers which keep your garden greenish even during winters.

Overall Garden Maintenance

As fall is the time of the year when growth is slowed down. So, start focusing on your garden maintenance more. Empty your garden containers so that they do not crack.

Clean your garden space by gathering all the scattered leaves in one of the corners. Sharp the gardening tools and clean them if needed. Empty water pots and keep them in the open air.

If you have additional compost in your garden, cover it with a wrap to avoid getting it wasted during snowfalls. Another important thing you must consider while rejuvenating your garden is to add sustainable environment-friendly products to your space.

Add wooden planters if you had not already to enhance the overall look of your garden. Hanging planters and wooden birdhouses also add a natural look to the garden.

If you have trees in your garden and have children who like playing in the garden, add a safe tree swing set to make it more recreational for them.

That’s A Wrap!

As fall and winters are the seasons when gardening does not require much time. Because the growth gets slower and most of the plants shed their leaves as the spring is about to start. So, to make your gardening equally enjoyable, a few useful tips are given above which you can follow to give your garden a completely new look. If you are thinking of planting new seedlings, prefer ones that bloom in spring. Other than plantation and taking care of plants and trees, you should also consider adding environmentally friendly products to your garden. They won’t only be useful but also eco-friendly ending up renewing the look of your garden space.
