Review: I heard about Professor Chandler's Strategic CSR a couple of years ago from a colleague of mine at an academic conference, and used his 4th edition in an introductory level Business and Society course at my University back in 2017. Although I had reviewed other better-known Business and Society textbooks, I found his book most compelling because he integratesvarious CSR perspectives into what he labels as "Strategic CSR," an approach quite different from other textbooks focused more on "summarizing" different perspectives. In other words, when you read his book, you will feel as if he was telling you a story (or his perspective), rather than telling you what others have said about CSR.

I am currently using his 5th edition in a CSR course I am teaching for management majors at my institutions. Many students said the book is easy to follow and interesting to read. I think that this 5th edition is even better than the previous editions because it is more logically organized and flows better as it is divided into stakeholder, legal, behavioral, strategic, and sustainable perspectives. In particular, discussions on corporate rights and responsibilities (Chapter 5) and Who Owns the Firm (Chapter 6), both of which I believe are essential to understanding corporate responsibilities, are much easier to deliver to students because they are now situated under "A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE" By positioning this way, those two chapters seem to grab more attention from students, too. Those of you who are interested in covering corporate governance topics will find "A BEHAVIORAL PERSPECTIVE" quite compelling because this book is one of the few that speak of them from the CSR lens. For those of you who teach strategy and sustainable business topics, this book shows us how we can weave CSR through those topics. In fact, I am thinking about using his book as a main textbook in my future undergrad strategic management courses.

The book itself is great for sure, and but what I have been even more impressed with is support materials that come with it. Sage has done a great job of making test bank questions, slides, and other supplementary online materials available to instructors. For example, last Friday I used video clips on "United Airlines Breaks Guitars" in elaborating Carroll's Pyramid of CSR. I look forward to getting more inspirations from online resources provided by Sage. Students also enjoy the privilege of receiving newsletters written by and sent directly from David. They think it is kinda cool to connect with the textbook author that way.

There is no book that is perfect, but I think Professor Chandler's book is closer to that than are other textbooks in the market.

Title: Excellent for understanding strategic CSR and value creation!!!

Review: This book provides current examples and thought provoking analogies to draw the reader in and provide a foundation for meaningful discussions regarding corporate social responsibility and strategic value creation. I teach a course on CSR and this book was required text along with the simulation. The simulation was mentioned by several students as one of the most impactful parts of the course to better understand the complexities of CSR. Some of the student comments are shared here.
"The topics are full of controversial issues that one can possibly argue either side for (ex: fair wage, capitalism vs socialism, Walmart vs Patagonia). Prior to the course the definitions of sustainability and CSR almost blurred together for me, but I now understand that sustainability is considered to be one of the driving forces of CSR."
"One of the aspects of the course that helped me develop a deeper understanding of a strategic CSR perspective was the group simulation exercise. It is so difficult for companies to socially responsible when we want to meet the needs of their stakeholders while being constrained to a budget, all on top of numerous outside factors that may affect our decisions."
"The simulations also really gave us a perspective of what we could be doing in CSR related fields."
"I felt much more hope for our system as the textbook worked to explain that people have caused environmental damage and social irresponsibility, and the system did not inherently do this. This means that we can push businesses to be responsible and demand more of them. It also made me consider how important firms' dedication to CSR is. The government implementing standards is helpful, but it's really the stakeholders that must push for more and only support what they believe in."

Title: Outstanding, Smart Update!

Review: This fifth edition has a number of excellent additions and improvements of which professors will want to take note. For instance, the original fifteen chapters have been distilled/combined into twelve. The better integration of material makes for a more effective text. Likewise, there are new as well as revised case studies. This keeps the text entirely up-to-date (especially since one of the case studies focuses on media/social media). Finally, the figures have been revamped/replaced. All told, this is a more student-friendly text than ever. And, that is always a boon (especially since it seems that nothing has been compromised).

For professors unacquainted with this text, it is both student and professor friendly. I really like the "Questions for Discussion and Review" boxes. These are phenomenal for students to "check-in" on their progress as well as for classroom use. Moreover, the references are all familiar to current students: whether its Starbucks or CNN, this textbook remains accessible to all.

This is an excellent text for an undergraduate class at a four-year college. (It is possible that it could be used at the community college level, but each professor should use his/her best judgement). It is clear, concise, and engaging. Highly recommended to professors seeking an updated or new textbook for their classes!
