Review: If you want to understand the beliefs and purposes behind Classical Conversations, start here! I read it with the hope of deciding whether or not I agreed with the CC philosophy before jumping in with both feet. The book is full of support for the whys, as well as the hows. Practical how-to examples are provided, resources are given, and questions are answered. I nearly skipped the first part of the book about why you should consider homeschooling. After teaching in public schools for over a decade, I had plenty of reasons already. Boy, am I glad I didn't skip it! Some completely new information was provided and I feel even better about my decision to homeschool. I learned so much about education that was never touched on in my undergrad and graduate education studies. I would highly recommend this book if you want to understand all about CC, or are looking to understand more about our country's education in general. I am motivated and ready to take the leap!

Review: I'd like to give a little background that I hope will aid in my book review. I am embarking on my 7th year of homeschooling. I have tried to classically educate my children since the beginning. After reading Susan Wise Bauer's "The Well-Trained Mind" I was excited, but thoroughly overwhelmed at how to implement all of her wonderful ideas. I struggled for 4 years on my own, and always felt as though I never accomplished all that "TWTM" laid out. At the end of each year I felt I had failed because we did not complete all that we "should have".

Then I was introduced to Classical Conversations. What a breath of fresh air! My children thrived. Our homeschool accomplished more, my children learned more, they enjoyed it more, and it required less effort on my part. THIS was what I had been struggling for four years to achieve.

This summer I read The Core. I believe this book can help many families who want to see their children truly educated, whether in the home, or in a brick and mortar school. For new homeschoolers, or those new to the idea of classical education, she explains classical education well and utilizes a common sense approach. The book is laid out by subject matter and shows how to encourage your children to truly learn. She also provides ideas that families who aren't homeschooling can use in their children's education.

As a veteran homeschooler, I was encouraged. This book reminded me to focus on the best things and not get distracted with good things. As a mom of multiple chidren, she encouraged me how to truly do a "one room schoolhouse", thereby simplifying my life. She has also graciously given us a glimpse into her own homeschool by laying out what has worked within her family. I appreciate that and am confident that I can implement something similar in our family.

Review: Anyone interested in learning about classical homeschooling should read Susan Wise Bauer's books, and those who have already read them are likely to find The Core disappointing. I read this book with very specific questions: what broad topics should my child know in each grade, and what does that look like on a granular, day-to-day level? This book didn't quite provide those answers (at least, not with any useful specificity).

The Core leans too heavily on what I call "cocktail soundbites," which are really just snappy anecdotes that the author adds less for the sake of imparting useful information and more to convey her own superiority. Unschoolers are just as guilty, as most homeschooling parents have heard variations of, "on our farm, we learn fractions by making banana bread and science by milking the cows every morning." The worldschooler version: "When we were in Bali and drove past all of those temples, Timmy totally learned about Hinduism." The classical version, as expressed by the author, "my students are currently memorizing the spelling of hundreds of Latin words," and, "When William looked at the hologram, he immediately applied a core fact about light without anyone telling him to... I had no expectation that he really understood refraction, reflection or spectrum. I just trusted that the properties of light are a good thing for a scientist to memorize." So many homeschooling books are just inspirational/aspirational (read: self-congratulatory fluff), and this wasn't really an exception. Your kid knows Aristotle, Plato and Kafka? Cool. Please guide me as to how I can get there with my children in a way that 1) doesn't elicit whining that it's too hard, 2) inspires curiosity and 3) imparts the text's meaning. Other than "read to your child every day," The Core provided no such assistance as to how to construct these well-read critical thinkers, especially in the later years.

The author also drops so much superfluous information that has little relevance to the material at hand: the angles of triangles, patterns that form a simple sentence, details of dialectics, etc. It would have been far better if Bortins expressed the utility of each specific item, how to learn it, and the resources that best cover said material. This was notably absent for philosophy, literature, and science.

If Classical Conversations is a primary way to impart these teachings, some case studies or classroom insights would have gone a long way in convincing me that a classical education is the best model. After all, I purchased this book wondering if there was any way that I needed to shake up my existing homeschooling structure and schedule. Unfortunately, no such takeaways were had.
