This was recommended by a friend, and I just thanked him for that recommendation.

I think I'd love to see a workbook or training course based on this material, but until that is available just even knowing this material can make others more understandable and reduce your frustrations in life.

Review: I want to preface by saying, if you have limited knowledge about the brain or how people make decisions about things, then this book may be more for you.

For me, from my perspective as a mental health therapist, I did enjoy some of the information in this book and appreciated reading about how the way I understand people has been validated in many ways by people in other lines of work. I think this book was lacking in giving much more NEW information, based on my current understanding of people.

With that being said, I have encouraged my intern to read it, and I am curious to hear her opinions and understand how some of these concepts that she has not yet become familiar with, land.

As I mentioned before, I think this is a great book for anyone who has limited understanding of the brain or the psychology of people, and wants to potentially improve their relationship with information, and become a more critical thinker.

Review: This is an absolutely fascinating book. McRaney is an exceptionally clear writer and a compelling story teller. He does not present himself as the expert but as learner-in-chief eager to share what he has gleaned from the experts. He’s not dogmatic or smug, but curious and humble.

I did not agree with everything he wrote (in some cases I profoundly disagreed), and I wish he had left out the occasional strong offensive language, but I found this book profoundly helpful and insightful not only on the subject of personal persuasion and mind-change, but also in explaining and accounting for the swift large-scale national-level change of mind we’ve seen in recent years.

Review: I was truly psyched to read this book, especially after watching interviews with David when it was released, and so my expectations were pretty high, and this book absolutely met those expectations.

According to the author, he set out to write a book on how to change minds and ended up worrying about how his journey ultimately changed his own mind about the subject. Very meta. Taking the reader along for the ride, we meet a varied cast of characters from researchers to activists and learn as the author did along the way. It's a great introduction to the various techniques that are being used to influence opinions and the research surrounding them; but it also points the way forward to bettering our own conversations around hot-button topics.

Review: Generally speaking, I tend to only read books by established experts. Psychologist, scientists or scholars. I tend to only want the established facts from those that have studied it or experimented with it. David pulls all of the modern thinking, from those that have developed their own tools through trial and learning, into a comprehensive book and shares the tools with us so we can all improve our ability to have productive discourse. Read this book if you want to improve your metacognition and have arguments that aren’t designed to “win”, but understand others perspectives.

Review: It's a decent read and some parts are compelling, but I felt the message was clouded to a degree by the author's political leanings. For a book that has at least a partial message of being open minded and having intellectual curiosity, I found it glaring that the author's views appeared to be in lockstep with a particular side of the aisle. He implies that if you give people enough time and space to talk through their stances on particular issues, it's only a matter of time before they come around to the "correct" camp.

I recommend Norman Doidge's "The Brain That Changes Itself" or perhaps Daniel Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow" if you want a deeper look into neuroscience. McRaney's "How Minds Change" also omits the groupthink/peer pressure phenomenon: once a particular viewpoint becomes more popular than not, the average person hesitates to go against the grain. On that particular concept, I recommend that the reader check out Douglas Murray's "The Madness of Crowds" or Gad Saad's "The Parasitic Mind."

Review: This book makes understanding the science of human psychology relatable, funny, and strikingly incisive and clear. It presents a surprising and compelling case for a more optimistic perspective on how minds change. In a nutshell: given the right conditions most people are willing to change their minds.

Most books change one’s mind to some extent, but this book is exceptional insofar as it has the power to change minds beyond that of the reader. Every insight isn’t just a curiosity, it’s a practical strategy you can use to change other people’s minds. That might sound like a cynical means for manipulation, but importantly the format requires genuinely listening to others, which changes the mindset from a war of ideas to a project of truth-seeking where we’re working toward a shared understanding.

The penultimate chapter of How Minds Change moves from how individual minds change, to how we collectively change our minds, socially and politically. There is a meta-level delight here because the book itself provides the means to bring about the changes it elucidates.
