Title: A must read for families of children with any developmental disabilities

Review: I highly recommend this book. It is a memoir by a mom who has a son with autism, or as some prefer to say, autistic son. She addresses many of the concerns families deal with while raising, (or caregiving for), someone with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) including: school, segregation, inclusion, transition, employment, housing, etc. and does so in a way that is compelling. I wish I had this book when my son was younger, however, as a seasoned advocate, meaning old, I still found many thought provoking segments in this book. She presents the history and research and then questions many concepts that are considered to be best practices. If you are interested in understanding the depth of issues, challenges and solutions I suggested you read this!

Review: Do NOT be put off by the title! The subject matter (disabled children and their parents facing a cutoff of services after they turn 21) is indeed difficult for many of us to think about, whether or not we ourselves have a child with disabilities, but McGovern does a GREAT job explaining not only the many challenges facing such children, but also the many options just now becoming available for them. You will learn a lot and be very inspired by the progress that has been made in the last thirty years. The story is told from the point of view not only of McGovern's own autistic son, but also that of many other children with very different kinds of disabilities. No other book I know addresses such a wide range of children, not to mention the humor, sensitivity, and grace she displays towards them. Highly recommended!

Review: This wonderful book focuses on a topic that I confess I’ve given little thought to, but McGovern elucidates its significance deeply and beautifully. Clearly the issue of how we treat the disabled is somehow germane to every dysfunction in the world right now. The author articulates such a damning indictment of our collective disregard for vulnerable populations, and at the same time offers hope in the form of a vision for something better. This book has deepened my awareness and my compassion in lasting ways.

Review: This book is required reading for every family with a differently-wired member. We all need the historic perspective of how people with differences have been treated by our society — the bad and the good. We need to respect and honor the pioneers of innovative programs and housing options. And Cammie McGovern is a marvelous storyteller weaving her parenting experience with her prolific research in such an engaging way. I am so thankful for the perspective her book gives me and expect I will be referring to it often in our future.

Review: Mom of a 12 yo with moderate to severe autism here, and writing a speedy review from the library between therapy appointments! McGovern's book puts so many things into context, helped me feel more seen than I usually do, and gave me lots of ideas for looking toward my son's transition to the teen years and beyond. She has done so much research and collected many ideas over the years and in the process of putting this book together. Wonderful resource! Thank you, Cammie!
