Novenas are under­going a surge of renewed popularity as Catholics reclaim their devotional heritage. Compiled and edited by best-selling prayer-book author William G. Storey, Novenas is the first novena prayer book of its kind. In it, Storey has collected and edited 40 novenas, as well as shorter prayers, in updated form and in modern English. They include novenas of intercession for special needs, novenas to saints, and novenas to Mary, to God the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Of particular note are newly designed novenas to modern holy people, including:

  Review: This would've been an excellent little novena book, taking on the format of the Liturgy of the Hours in style, which is the prayer and extension of the Mass in liturgy for the whole Church. But I found it disturbing, then, that Storey uses the Protestant version of the "Our Father", and not as an add on, as it is in the Mass, but represented as the actual words in the prayer Jesus gave to us in the Bible. Also, on page 1, he refers to the Latin Mass as "drab". I do not attend Latin Masses, mainly because they aren't available in my area, and I would like to go to one now and then, as they are a rich part of our heritage. They are accepted in the Church for those who enjoy attending them... and I don't appreciate any Mass, that is accepted in the Church, to be bashed in this manner. And last but not least, in the explanation of the novena to the Holy Spirit, he refers to those who were in attendance in the upper room, waiting for Pentecost as, and I quote from page 57 "...on Pentecost Sunday, Mary, the apostles, the brothers of Jesus, and many other disciples spent these nine days in prayer, awaiting the promised Spirit of fire anc light." By repeating the word "brothers" and not letting it go by referring to them in only that manner, and adding the word "disciples" along with it, implies the author, intentional or not, believes that Jesus had physical brothers, born of Mary. I think this is negligent on the author's part, to say the least, and borders on heresy. I tossed this book in the trash, sadly. I may have been able to ignore the first two of my complaints, but the third one was a deal breaker for me, as it implies Mary was not ever virgin. So if you care about standing up for the Roman Catholic Church and Truth, I wouldn't give nor own this book, hence the need to throw it away instead of getting my money back. There may be more disturbing aspects in this book, but I didn't read the entire book. And as it said, if you can't trust a man in little things, you can't trust him in big things. Actually, the negligence about Mary isn't a little thing.

  Review: I find it very enlightening and useful. So great for meditation, especially on the Cross, and Sacred Heart of Jesus. I love praying and find myself going to this book often, just in the few days I've had it.
