From the author of Popular Economics comes a surpringly sunny projection of America's future job market.

Forget the doomsday predictions of sour-faced nostalgists who say automization and globalization will take away your dream job. The job market is only going to get better and better, according to economist John Tamny, who argues in The End of Work thatΒ the greatest gift of prosperity, beyond freedom from painful want, is the existence of work that is interesting.Β Β

The lessons in economics that appear throughout the book are an added bonus. While at least one reviewer was turned off because they saw it as right-wing politics (it's not), I find it difficult to find fault in his underlying premise from Henry Hazlitt:

"What is harmful or disastrous to an individual must be equally harmful or disastrous to the collection of individuals that make up a nation."

The economic explanations are a critical component of the book, and without understanding them I believe individuals will (and do!) find it hard to trust the process that will allow them to be paid for their passions as well.

Title: In the tradition of George Gilder

Review: John Tamny follows the tradition of George Gilder in showing the economic possibilities for individual Americans if we can just maintain an open society and free market system. In this readable book Tamny draws on examples from rock-and-roll, sports, and popular culture to show the power of entrepreneurship and how in the emerging economy, opportunities to pursue passions will be open to more and more persons. It is a contrast to the downbeat futures linked to automation that we often we read about.

Title: I love his optimism

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2/3 of this book. Tamny's analogies to and examples of sport really make sense and support his underlying notions of the growing prosperity in our world and the doors that prosperity is opening regarding our "work." I really appreciate his optimism and outlook but could have done without his dive into right wing, take care of the rich and wealth will automatically trickle down the economic food chain but only if we severely limit the size of the federal government, economic "policy" regurgitation in the last part of the book.

Review: Not worth the purchase priceβ€” breezy style with very little in the way of disciplined thinking.

Title: Work We Love
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018
Review: This is a brilliant essay on how capitalism has created the prosperity that allows an almost infinite variety of choices of occupations. For those who seek fulfillment in their work, there is something out there that will ignite one's passion so that a job need not be "work". Fun read.
